Rep. Andy Harris (R-Md.) seemingly lost it on Tuesday during a congressional debate in Maryland with Democratic challenger Dan Schwartz, scolding several audience members as “rude” for laughing at his excuse for skyrocketing diesel prices under President Donald Trump.

“The facts are that diesel prices have gone up, there’s no question about it,” Harris told constituents at the event in Maryland’s 1st Congressional District. “Why has it gone up? Because the Democrats have environment regulations, have not—“

Harris was nearly drowned out by the crowd’s belly-bursting laughter.

The MAGA lawmaker ultimately shrugged, shook his head, telling one audience member, “Ma’am, I gotta tell ya, this is the problem. You all say you believe there’s a First Amendment, but only if we agree with you! You should let me finish the sentence, ma’am. You are rude!”

Fuel costs have ballooned since Trump launched his war on Iran, and they reacted by closing the Strait of Hormuz, through which a fifth of the world’s oil passes. He has since opted to purchase millions of tons of diesel from Russia amid their ongoing invasion of Ukraine.

Schwartz criticized the decision during the debate, hosted by the League of Women Voters in Cambridge, Maryland. Harris, who has represented the district since 2011, continued lashing out after his attempt to blame Democrats for soaring gas prices.

“You’re rude, too,” Harris told a constituent, with another firing back: “You started it!”

The national average cost for a gallon of diesel is currently $6.29, nearly double the $3.65 from only one year ago. The national average for regular gas is $4.33, up from $3.07 last year. Diesel hit $6.52 last month, marking the highest average price ever recorded.

Harris chairs the House Freedom Caucus and voted with Trump’s stated positions 94.7% of the time through 2025, according to a VoteHub analysis. He opposes abortion, tax increases and raising the minimum wage — and once even tried to bring a gun onto the House floor.

While his opponent tried to keep the debate civil Tuesday by telling the crowd it’s “important” they hear “from both” candidates, Harris never finished his explanation for why Democrats are supposedly at fault for high diesel prices. The real reasons are unfortunately complex.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration stated in a recent report that fuel supplies are “tight” due to “reduced global refining activity.” Amid the Iran war, Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabian refineries and Ukrainian attacks on Russian refineries have exacerbated the issue.

High fuel costs are expected to be a key issue for voters in the upcoming midterm elections.
