Democratic Strategist Slams 'Dimwitted' JD Vance Over Campaign Trail Insults: 'This Charmless Oaf'

Democratic strategist Paul Begala unleashed on JD Vance on Friday for his “dopey” insults about Democratic Senate candidates James Talarico and Abdul El-Sayed, calling the vice president “dimwitted” and a “charmless oaf.” Begala minced few words after “News Central” host John Berman played a recent clip of Vance calling El-Sayed “a little weasel who should shut his mouth and show a little gratitude to the country that gave him everything.” “JD must stand for ‘Just Dumb,’” Begala responded Friday. “Because I know he went to Yale … but come on, that must have been like, some hillbilly DEI thing.” “He’s a dum-dum,” Begala continued. “He comes to my state of Texas and slurs James Talarico, slurs gay Americans and gay Texans, of which there’s a whole lot of them.” Vance implied during a midterm rally in Texas on Tuesday that Talarico is gay, responding to an effusive rallygoer, “I love you, too, sir. In a totally platonic way, to be clear. I’m the vice president — not James Talarico.” “Now he’s going and calling El-Sayed... It’s just so dumb,” Begala fumed on Friday. “Like, are they trying to lose? There’s a reason that Donald Trump is 30 points underwater everywhere you look. And JD is only a small part of that, but it’s just astonishing to me.” Vance called El-Sayed a “weasel” during a midterm rally in Michigan for GOP Senate nominee Mike Rogers, prompting the Democratic University of Michigan graduate to fire back at Vance that he was talking about “a fucking Wolverine.” Begala and Berman seemed to enjoy that particular comeback. Begala, chief strategist to former President Bill Clinton during his 1992 campaign, ultimately did share some criticism of El-Sayed, saying he’d rather see the progressive campaign with moderates than “leftists” such as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.). “He ought to be campaigning in that Upper Peninsula with Bart Stupak, a Democrat who won that district nine times,” Begala suggested Friday. “And we’ve only won the Upper Peninsula once in a presidential election in this century.” The Democratic strategist concluded with some final digs at Vance, “So, I have my concerns with the way Abdul is running his campaign. But the kind of, just, dopey slurs coming from this dim-witted vice president — this charmless oaf — you can have him.” By entering your email and clicking Sign Up, you're agreeing to let us send you customized marketing messages about us and our advertising partners.
