Rob Lowe Says He Was The 1 Person Who Was 'Happy' Will Smith Slapped Chris Rock

Rob Lowe was the “only person” in the world who was “happy” when Will Smith slapped Chris Rock at the Oscars in 2022 ― for good reason. “I’m not sure if you’re aware, but I once did a song and dance musical number for the Oscars that did not go over well,” Lowe said during an appearance on SiriusXM’s “Andy Cohen Live” this week. “The worst opening in Oscar history,” Cohen said of the actor’s poorly executed 1989 show kickoff, where he confusingly sang “Proud Mary” alongside Snow White and a host of Disney characters. “The worst opening ever. When Will Smith slapped Chris Rock, I was the only person happy,” Lowe quipped. “Because I was like, ‘Oh, good ― so now that’s the worst moment in Oscar history.’ But it turns out not really. Turns out I still am dragged ― dragged ― every year.” “Yes, when we look back at the Oscars,” Cohen agreed. “This year even, I guess some people didn’t love some of the Emmys and they were like, ‘At least it wasn’t Rob,’” Lowe shared. “It’s like, guys, there should be a statute of limitations.” While Lowe’s embarrassment lives on, he did say that he’s spoken about the incident with John Fogerty, who wrote “Proud Mary.” “John Fogerty was watching it at home, and he liked it,” Lowe said. “He forgave me.” Rock was recently asked to reflect on the Will Smith slap incident ― which occurred four years ago ― in a new interview with Variety published earlier this month. “Hey, man. You know, to answer your question a little bit, I wish nothing would have happened,” the comedian said. “It’s a crazy world. We walk by homeless people. There’s all sorts of shit going on right now. Me having a bad day is not the biggest — it’s not that important.” He also shared there was only one way that he would return to the award show, which he’s hosted twice. “The only way I’ll go back is if I’m nominated, and I’m not getting nominated,” Rock explained. “And that’s OK. We’ll deal with that if it happens. Like, let’s manage expectations.” By entering your email and clicking Sign Up, you're agreeing to let us send you customized marketing messages about us and our advertising partners.
