President Donald Trump’s speech on the first night of the GOP’s midterm convention didn’t have quite the pull of ... Greg Gutfeld?

The New York Times reported that an average of 2.5 million people watched Trump’s rambling address on Fox News ― less than the usual viewership for the wisecracking host’s show and Sean Hannity’s in that 9-11 p.m. time frame.

The lack of a “Trump bump” could also be attributed to NBC’s broadcast of the NFL opening night game between the New England Patriots and the victorious Seattle Seahawks. But the network said those Nielsen numbers won’t be out until next week, according to the newspaper.

Perhaps ignoring that last year’s opening game lured an average of 31.9 million viewers until a third-quarter weather delay, Trump declared victory over the NFL’s 2026 curtain-raiser anyway before any stats were available.

“The Republican Midterm Convention last night, in Dallas, was a major, sold out hit, far bigger, better, and more important than anyone thought possible,” he wrote on Truth Social Thursday. “It was really something, streaming all over the place, and really big numbers, despite going up against the NFL. The overall numbers beat the NFL.”

Trump also said the American Airlines Center in Dallas was “packed” ― and that certainly didn’t seem to be the case.

New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman had warned that Trump’s team had not accounted for the televised football competition when planning for the event.

His speech certainly seemed to have the stuff that would pull in his loyalists.

He offered what was basically a $5,000 bribe to voters, built a masturbation joke around Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico of Texas, and declared the United States could have faced Armageddon if he hadn’t been elected.
