President Donald Trump trotted out several prominent women Monday at the signing of an executive order establishing a Women’s Health Task Force at the White House and a Women’s Health Division at the National Institutes of Health.

First lady Melania Trump; White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles; second lady Usha Vance, carrying her fourth baby; and Cheryl Hines, the wife of Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., were all in attendance at the signing.

Melania Trump, who conceived the idea for the initiative, delivered the opening remarks, saying that “previous generations fought for women’s rights,” and that “our generation will fight to discover cures that will ensure a woman can lead her life in health and to the fullest.”

The irony, of course, is that the Trump administration and the MAGA movement have done everything in their power to strip women of their bodily autonomy by taking away abortion rights and gender-affirming care, going after birth control access and gutting women’s health research. Still, Melania Trump, who has said she opposes her husband’s anti-abortion views, stood behind the podium to introduce the new task force.

After ranting about women’s shoes and the new White House ballroom, Donald Trump promised his administration would get women “the care that they need and deserve,” claiming the initiative will promote research and technology to diagnose conditions “sooner.”

“When I heard about it, I said, ‘Are you sure they don’t have that?’” he said at the signing. “They don’t have a women’s health division?”

The NIH already has an Office of Research on Women’s Health.

At the signing, Trump congratulated Wiles on being cancer-free ― something she announced last month after first revealing her early stage breast cancer diagnosis in March.
