Vice President JD Vance said he didn’t think it’d be “weird” if President Donald Trump delayed endorsing him in a potential 2028 run for president.

On “2WAY TONIGHT” on Monday, journalist Mark Halperin pressed Vance on a scenario predicted by a panel that the veep was 99% to 100% sure to run but that Trump would withhold his endorsement for a long while to “toy” with Vance and play the game.

Vance said he thought Trump would endorse him but couldn’t say with full certainty that it would be right away.

“I would think so, but I don’t know, man,” the vice president said. “I haven’t talked to him about it.”

“It’d be kinda weird if you said to him, ‘Mr. President, I’m gonna run,’ and he said, ‘Yeah, let me think about it,’” Halperin replied.

“No, I don’t think it’d be weird,” Vance responded. “Again, I think I would get his endorsement. But I also think there’s something to be said for people actually running their own race, and because the president’s endorsement is so dispositive, you could absolutely see a scenario where the president says, ‘You know what? We need to let, like, this race play out and not, like, preemptively prejudge the results.’”

He continued, “So, I don’t know. Again, having never spoken to the president about this, I can’t speak to his psychology on it. But my attitude is that if I run, I think the president would endorse me, but I also haven’t talked to him about it yet.”

Vance reiterated in the interview that he is focused on the midterms and “really have not made up my mind” about a run for the top job.

In a New York Times aggregation of recent polls for 2028, Vance holds a commanding lead among Republicans.

Elsewhere in the interview, Vance said he wouldn’t endorse Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in his reelection bid, breaking with Trump on the matter. “I’m not anti-endorsing him, I’m not pro-endorsing him, I’m not getting involved in Israeli elections,” Vance said.
