Conan O’Brien Has A Hot Take About ‘Terrible Person’ Rudy Giuliani And… Uh, Soap

Could someone kindly point Rudy Giuliani in the direction of a shower? Because Conan O’Brien just did him dirty. The comedian appeared on the popular YouTube series “SubwayTakes” on Tuesday and offered host Kareem Rahma a hot take about controversial historical figures. “All statues should be made out of soap,” O’Brien said. “Hear me out.” He continued, “We put up these statues to people and after 50 years or something, we realize, ‘That’s a terrible person.’” “We realize like, ‘Oh my God, that person had a plantation, that person did horrible things. Let’s tear it down,’” he added. O’Brien seemed to be referencing the political push-and-pull over Confederate statues, which many felt glorified the era of slavery. In 2020, amid the George Floyd protests, over 100 symbols of the Confederacy across the United States were removed, relocated or renamed. In 2025, President Donald Trump pushed to have them restored. O’Brien went on to propose that going forward, all statues should be made of a “durable soap.” “The soap lasts about maybe 10 years and then it just dissolves into bubbles,” O’Brien said. “Then we as a society decide to make the statue again or not make the statue again.” This is when he decided to take a jab at former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who, in the early aughts, was considered a hero for his response to the 9/11 attacks. When Giuliani began advising Trump during the president’s first administration, however, public perception of him drastically changed for the worse. “Giuliani statue probably would go up in what, 2005?” O’Brien pointed out. “And now, right now, it would be getting down to like bubbles. We’re not making that Giuliani statue.” O’Brien described the midway point of these statues as a “defigured mess,” which he argued may actually work in the favor of whoever is being honored. “People go and really look at the statue to try and figure out, ‘Who is that?’ O’Brien joked. “That’s the best part of my idea.” He added, “They’ll go to it, and they’ll say, like, ‘Who do you think that is?’ ‘I think it’s Michael Jackson.’ ‘Oh, really? I think it’s President Andrew Jackson.’” This isn’t the first time O’Brien has spoken out about MAGA politics indirectly. In 2025, while hosting the Oscars, he took a dig at Trump without even mentioning his name. While hosting the awards show earlier this year, he also made a crack about Jeffrey Epstein in a similar manner. The former late-night talk show host has also made political jokes while doing commencement speeches at his alma mater, Harvard University, in 2020 and in May.
