Republican U.S. Senate candidate Rep. Ashley Hinson (Iowa) made a tone-deaf request to a group of supporters while stumping on the campaign trail this week.

Speaking in Fort Dodge on Wednesday, Hinson, who has voted five times against a War Powers Resolution to end the Iran war, implored her supporters to donate “gas money” for her campaign bus.

“Use that anger about these lies that they’re telling about us on TV, cause if they’re willing to lie about me, they’re willing to lie about you. So I want you to channel that into action in getting your friends out to vote, help give us a little gas money for our bus, make sure we’re showing up at the polls, because there is more to do,” Hinson said.

Oil and gas prices have remained high since the U.S. and Israel launched their war against Iran in late February.

As of Friday, Brent Crude, the global benchmark for oil prices, sat at $109 per barrel.

The average nationwide price for a gallon of regular gas currently sits at roughly $4.32, according to AAA.

Hinson’s Democratic opponent in the Senate race, Josh Turek, called her request “shameful” in light of her votes to continue the Iran war.

“Now she’s begging for gas money while Iowans are struggling to fill up their tanks and Iowa farmers are struggling to afford the diesel to harvest their fields,” he posted Friday on X. “That’s shameful.”
