They ain’t sexy, but they’ll sure get the job done.

As a deputy editorial director on the BuzzFeed Shopping team with almost a decade in the lifestyle and service journalism sphere, I use my shopping editor eye to find and vet products across a variety of categories, including lifestyle, home, beauty, fashion, pets, cleaning, travel, aging, and more.

When your house feels like a endless series of minor annoyances, finding practical solutions for your home that solve daily hassles can instantly turn your routine around. Fortunately, we found a lineup of somewhat boring products for your home that just make sense to keep everything running smoothly. Ahead, you’ll discover game-changing problem-solvers like a space-saving outlet extender, a no-scrub shower spray, and a heavy-duty drain plunger that reviewers swear by to make life so much easier.

Promising review: "Y'all, this thing is amazing! My kitchen sink was completely clogged for four days. I've been trying to clear the drain with a different sink plunger that I already had, and it didn't do diddly-squat. I was about to give up and call a plumber. Then I decided to order this one, and it just arrived...it completely cleared the drain in like three minutes. So then I decided to take it to the bathroom sink that had been draining extremely slowly, and within a minute, I had the water running so quickly and smoothly again. I got the small one, and it's the perfect size for kitchen and bathroom sinks." —JNeen

Promising review: "My ornery cat insists on snagging up furniture with her claws, instead of using one of the several scratching posts she has. As you can see, this Snag Nab-It needle/tool does a GREAT job, pulling the snags in — and hiding the damage, WITHOUT cutting any threads (avoiding creating holes)." —Betsy P.

Promising review: "I have been looking for a solution that would allow for a nightstand and also a dresser to be pushed up against a wall, even with things plugged into the outlet behind that furniture. I FOUND IT. This wall outlet extender does exactly what it says it will do. I have a fan, clock radio, and watch charger plugged into it, and can still move the nightstand right up against the wall. The light on the dresser no longer forces the dresser to be out a couple of inches; it, too, can be pushed right up against the wall, and the cord is not in danger of getting crushed and becoming a fire hazard. A game changer! I will be ordering a few more." —Lynda L.

Get a two-pack from Amazon for $5.95+ (available in two and three prong styles).

You can use them for cats, dogs, guinea pigs, hamsters, bunnies, etc. And they're also great for whelping boxes.

Promising review: "This item was the perfect choice for my bunnies’ pen. The design is gorgeous. I wanted something light and easy to maneuver under their heavier acrylic pen, and this one fits the bill perfectly. Washed and dried, and kept its shape. Its leak-proof and waterproof design helps with pet mess and water bowl spillage, ensuring a nice dry space for bunny flops. Two in a pack allows me to switch out when washing, so my buns are always protected. I cannot say enough about this brand and the value overall will have me coming back as needed when I expand their pen." —Sam Cam

Promising review: "I love these. They're a great way to organize and store your batteries. I prefer these over the large cases that store multiple types of batteries together because I can just grab the size I need and throw them in my bag. I don't have to carry a cumbersome, large case or loose batteries. I highly recommend them." —Mr. Methuselah

Promising review: "Our screens are on a second-floor balcony. There really isn't any good way to clean the outside of the screens. Luckily, the fibers on this screen cleaner are small enough that they seem to fit through the screen and clean both sides. I'm sure it doesn't clean the outside as well as it does the inside, but any help is always appreciated. I was actually shocked at how much dirt came off the screens with this very simple tool. I used it wet with a small amount of dish soap, and it worked really well. I also appreciated that after I was finished, I was just easily able to rinse and dry the screen cleaner for future use. A simple tool at an excellent price." —BonjourBeautyByAmy

The high-density sponges are squishy on the inside with an emery layer on the outside. They can be cut into smaller chunks for cleaning nooks and crannies.

Promising review: "Nice and thin. You'll find so many more uses for these around the house than just getting stuff off the underside of cookware! I had hard, scaly water deposits on the glass surrounding our powder room faucet (one of those fancy, highfalutin modern-looking things). I've tried everything for four years to get this stuff off. One day I thought, maybe I'll try my sponges. Took it all off super easily!!!! Faucet looks like new. My only rec is to spot-test your item first before using it because it will scratch certain surfaces if you scrub too aggressively (for example, it gets the burned-on, weird stuff off of the bottom of my fave Our Place pan, but I rubbed too hard in one spot and it took the color right off lol)." —Hoarder

Get an eight-pack from Amazon for $7.69+ (available in two sponge thicknesses and colors).

Promising reviews: "You need this. This is a lifesaver. The amount of time I used to spend cutting out hair from my vacuum brush/roller has been cut by a fraction with this little tool. Wow!" —Holly Hendrickson

"Between myself (medium long hair) and my overly fluffy cat, a lot of hair and fluff was continually getting caught up on the roller brush of my vacuum. I dreaded vacuuming because it took so long to pull and snip the hairs wrapped up on the roller brush out with scissors. Not anymore! This silly, little, inexpensive thing works great! Super quick to remove all the hair/fur — in virtually a minute, then back to vacuuming with my lovely Miele vacuum." —MKS

Tibet Almond Stick is a small business based in Illinois.

Promising review: "I recently got these Tibetan floor wax sticks, and they're like magic wands for your floors and furniture! Got a scratch? No problem. Just wave one of these sticks over it, and voilà — scratch be gone! It's like having a tiny wizard in your cleaning arsenal. These wax sticks fill in scratches on the floor and furniture like a charm. My floors and furniture look brand new, and I didn't even have to cast a spell. Highly recommend!" —b4komer

Promising review: "I moved to a new (well, not exactly new — the building is about 50 years old) New Jersey apartment three years ago, and I loved it then and still love it today. But there was one serious issue at the time I moved in: my toilet tank. Three years ago, just for curiosity's sake, I lifted the cover, and I nearly fainted after what I peeked inside. It seemed the tank had never been cleaned since it was first installed. I tried to clean it out using vinegar. No use. Scrub it with Comet? Forget it. Straight bleach? Worked a bit, but it was a waste of time. Happily, I came across this product. After two applications, I allowed the tank to marinate (soak) overnight. After I lifted the cover in the morning, what a shock!!! The entire tank looked SO MUCH CLEANER THAN EVER BEFORE. This is a gift from the toilet gods. Now I have the cleanest toilet tank in my entire building, for sure :) Very happy and totally satisfied with this cleaner, and I'll purchase it again if needed from Amazon. You won't be disappointed with this amazing yucky tank cleaner." —IZZY

Promising review: "I immediately thought I got 'influenced' and was going to regret these when I opened the box. I was so wrong. I love these so much. I wish I’d taken a before picture because my groceries were rolling toward the back, and the shelves were drooping in the middle. I was so afraid the shelves were going to fall. I 'installed' these bamboo covers, and visually I was in love. I put it to the test and reloaded all of my pantry items — I was able to organize everything without the items rolling back or to the middle. Everything stayed put. No more drooping shelves. It looks clean and fancy. I’m glad I purchased these. It was decently easy to assemble and add to the shelves. I think they will be pretty durable. I’m happy with this purchase." —Krista B.

Promising review: "Two months ago, we got a 6-month-old puppy who has needed some time to get adjusted. That included more than a few accidents in our living room and on his bed. This machine has made cleanup of everything so much simpler, and I love that it's deep cleaning and has a nontoxic pet cleaner so that our not-so-little puppy isn't harmed through exposure or smells. Also helpful since my teenage sons like to camp out on the couch with their friends on long weekends, and our couch gets that fresh, clean smell in an hour." —Kindle Customer

Promising review: "Wow. Game changer. I have to change my shower curtain liner a lot because of a humid bathroom (yes, even with a fan on 😬). Though there are greater issues in the world, why wouldn't you want to save yourself some time with these hooks? Not having to take the curtain off each time I change the liner has really been more satisfying than I had anticipated. An added bonus is the rings themselves: The balls that were added hug the shower curtain rod, so they never pop off. Something I never knew I needed, either. Love these!" —Jdbouchart

These support boards are furniture-grade wood slats covered in fabric, with a 400-pound weight capacity.

Promising review: "Ten years ago, we bought an inexpensive sofa to get more seating. Once home, after the glory of a bargain wore off, I found the seating sagged way too much. So I put unused thick storage container lids under the cushion to lessen the sag. Minuscule improvement. Barely tolerable to even take a nap on. But the sofa still looks so good...looks are deceiving. Purchased Ben's Home Cushion Support Inserts and lined the sofa's interior lining. Reinstalled the cushions, and both my husband and I sat on them at the same time. Cushions are still extremely comfortable, but — Wow! —Our tushes felt loved and supported. Laid down like for a nap and felt level support all the way across the sofa. We did not even feel that uncomfortable hardness some reviewers described. The panels fit well and snugly. The sofa seems way better than when we first bought it. Wish I had known about these inserts 10 years ago. Love my bargain sofa now. Thanks, Ben!" —Pattep

Promising review: "So I’m a baking soda girlie. I’ve never met a mess or stubborn stain I couldn’t tackle with a little elbow grease and baking soda. This product has been on my radar for a while now, but I haven’t gotten it because I’ve been getting by fine, the way I always have. However, recently I inherited a pitcher that lived on my grandma's gas stove. I brought it home and realized how dirty it actually was. I tried to do the baking soda paste. I tried to scrape the soot off with a knife, but it was not working. This was 30 years of soot and wear. It’s a coffee percolator, but it was used as a stove decoration. I finally decided to try this stuff because my baking soda and elbow grease method was not working; it still took a little work, a little scrubbing, but this product cleaned it. There are no scratches in the enamel, everything looks like it should, and I just want to say that when all else fails, this product is not a gimmick. I’m not a product person; I turn to elbow grease and my mom’s advice to solve my cleaning problems. I’m here to tell you to TRY THAT, and it should work. It is when all else fails, TRY THIS. There’s magic in here." —Allison

Promising review: "We cannot BEGIN to tell you what a lifesaver this is! We have two old fiberglass tubs with vinyl shower enclosures that, no matter what amount of scrubbing we have done with everything from bleach to cleanser to vinegar and baking soda, would NOT come clean. After I took my shower last night, I sprayed down the tub and walls. Within minutes, all the built-up water deposits, dirt, and grime began to melt away in front of my eyes. I left it on overnight, and when I got up this morning, it did not look like the same tub and shower. This product is a godsend, especially for old folks like us who have difficulty getting down on our hands and knees and scrubbing anything. More importantly, it performs as advertised. We plan on using it as part of our weekly cleanup routine. This is truly an overnight sensation!" —Amazon Customer

Promising review: "Where has this been all my cat-loving life? Sticky rollers work fine for clothes, but this is the only product that has ever COMPLETELY removed all the cat hair from my bed. I have a long-haired 20-pound tabby, and if you run your hands up his back a few times and fling the hair everywhere, it looks like it's snowing — he never stops shedding, no matter what I do. After using the ChomChom, I can put on a black dress and roll around on my bed and not get a single hair on me. It's absolutely amazing. Everyone is getting one for Christmas, even if they don't have a pet. I don't care, it's THAT good." —DH

Promising review: "Excellent product. Just what I was looking for. I recently bought the Dreame X50, and this covers it, plus I am able to slide the cover and empty the water. The only thing that it doesn’t have is a place to store accessories. A little storage area would be nice." —M C

Promising review: "I love WD-40 products and use them for everything. I spray on shovels to keep dirt or snow from sticking, spray around windows and thresholds to deter bugs, clean Sharpies off wood and walls, and, of course, stop squeaky doors. These small direct-point application pens are great. Keep one in the glove box, my kitchen 'junk' drawer, and the house toolbox." —BBP623

Get a three-pack from Amazon for $12.49.

My small apartment bathroom didn't come with a lot of storage space — a shallow medicine cabinet, a small cabinet under the sink, and two rickety wall shelves over the toilet. That free space got used up fast between two people, and I hated the feeling of cabinets and shelves that were so stuffed and cluttered that I had to remove everything to find anything. This handy cart has been so useful in creating additional storage space for both things that I reach for frequently (like extra rolls of toilet paper and cotton buds) *and* things that I don't reach for often and would prefer to keep hidden (like cleaning supplies, extra bars of soap, and period supplies). I also really appreciate that the wood top becomes extra counter space! It's great for candles, before-you-go sprays, air freshener sprays, etc. But I particularly love that it's a place for guests to put their toiletry bag when they stay over, since my sink is so small that there's no real counter space available.

Promising review: "In spite of this rolling cart being on the pricier side, I really appreciate its functionality and aesthetics. My apartment bathroom is on the smaller side and has no built-in storage besides an over-the-sink medicine cabinet. I knew I needed a space-saving solution that would keep eyesores out of sight (e.g., cleaning supplies, extra toilet paper), so I finally bit the bullet and purchased this cart. I have no regrets! I love that it fits right next to the toilet and doubles as a side table for things like tissue paper, room sprays, and cellphones. The top of the cart is a solid plank of wood, which is a nice touch, and the handle makes it easy to pull the cart out. The cart's dimensions are perfect for fitting several rolls of extra toilet paper, a toilet scrubber, cleaning products, and any other items you'd like to keep out of sight. Assembly was easy as well. All you need to do is attach the handle and wheels. Overall, I'm really enjoying using this cart in my small living space!" —Solae Studio

Promising review: "Absolutely worth it for peace of mind, alerted me to leaks from a window during heavy rains. Eventually replaced the window. Bought a few more to place in different areas of my home. Promising review: "I don't have 50+ spices in my collection, so this made the most sense with all of my standby spices. Decent weight so it isn't flimsy, and easy to clean with grease splatters." —Katie G

Promising review: "I have been using these hangers for decades! They never fail....never fall off. These are the only hangers I trust on my decorative plates." —smr61754

Promising review: "I bought this product in a two-pack for my T-shirts because I hate folding and putting laundry away, and thought it would be a more convenient way for me to keep my clothes organized, and wow! When I saw how durable and well-made they were, and how much space they saved, and how easy they were to use, I bought more! They were also a great value for the money, and I was able to just walk into my closet and see all my clothes, so they were all visible as soon as I opened my closet, no more searching through drawers. The next two packs I bought, I even used to hang my hoodies; these things are super durable and sturdy. I highly recommend these little darlings for anyone trying to get organized." —Sissy

Promising review: "I bought one for my small laundry room/closet off of my kitchen and ended up buying a second one because it saves so much space — either for hanging clothes that are dry or drying clothes on a line. I pretty much use the second one in front of a window in this closet and close it when not in use so it doesn't cut the light from the window." —SKB

Get a rack from Amazon for $17.99+ (available in five colors and an extended style).

Promising review: "These deodorizer balls really work! I placed one at the bottom of my kitchen trash bin, one in my laundry hamper, and one inside my car. The odor was taken away in all three areas, especially the kitchen trash bin, which had a lingering odor, even after the trash was removed. I used to spray some disinfectant spray into the bottom of the trash bin to eliminate the odor. That worked, but only temporarily. After I added one of these deodorizer balls, the odor was completely gone and hasn't returned yet. So far, it's been over the two-month period stated on the package, and they still seem to be working. They also give off a mild, pleasant scent." —RS

Get it from Amazon for $5.98 (also available in a 6- and a 10-pack)

After working from home for the last three years, I've realized how much I value the air quality in my apartment. I live in an older building (think turn-of-the-century old) and there are lots of little holes and crevices where dirt, dust, and allergens can creep in. Coupled with the terrible air quality we've experienced in NYC because of wildfires in Canada a few months ago, the air in my home often triggers a sore throat, congestion, and sneezing fits in the morning. I have two air purifiers already but I realized that buying replacement filters is ANNOYING and surprisingly expensive. The fact that this Shark air purifier can clean the air and doesn't need a filter replacement for five years is just *chef's kiss*. I keep this in the small office off of the kitchen to help filter out odors from cooking and it does a fantastic job. It also comes with a scented cartridge designed to keep your home smelling fresh. (Unfortunately, the scent gives me a headache so I don't often have it running, but it does smell lovely!)

Get it from Amazon and Shark for $399.99+ (for the model that covers 1,400 square feet; available in two colors and other coverage options).

Promising review: "Just drop this in your humidifier and it keeps the water pretty darn mildew and mold free. Super easy to use, no smell, and safe. I have already repurchased and given a few to other people as well." —Kristine
