Christa Pike, the Tennessee inmate who survived a botched execution attempt last week, is awake and speaking, her attorneys said Tuesday.

“Against all odds, Christa Pike is conscious, speaking, and continues to receive critical medical care,” Pike’s attorneys said in a statement to HuffPost. “Despite the severe damage she endured to her arms, she is still handcuffed and shackled to the bed. Her recovery is medically unprecedented. Her prognosis remains unclear but, at a minimum, we expect a long recovery.”

Pike, 50, became one of the youngest women sent to death row when she and her boyfriend tortured and killed classmate Colleen Slemmer in 1995, when Pike was 18.

Last Wednesday, on the night of her execution, Pike was given two doses of the lethal injection drug pentobarbital. The pentobarbital didn’t kill her, but instead left her critically injured. Pike was hospitalized, unconscious and also placed on a ventilator for several days.

In their statement, Pike’s attorneys called on Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee (R) to commute her sentence.

“Christa is a survivor and will take recovery one day at a time,” the statement said. “We continue to ask the Governor of Tennessee to commute Christa Pike’s sentence to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.”

Pike’s attorneys will be in court Wednesday to seek more information about the failed execution attempt, and said they will hold a press conference following the hearing.
