Trump’s Kimmel Obsession Decoded By Seth Meyers And John Oliver And... Wow

John Oliver and Seth Meyers appeared on Jimmy Kimmel’s show Thursday and offered a theory for why Kimmel appears to attract more of Donald Trump’s late-night ire than they do. Oliver and Meyers, who host a monthly comedy show at New York’s Beacon Theatre, said Kimmel frequently comes up during audience Q&As when they’re asked what it feels like to be disliked by the president. “And we always say as long as you’re on the air, we’re fine,” Oliver told Kimmel. “You’re the problem, and you draw all the ire [...] we are fully supportive. We are fully behind you the way that we’re fully behind a bulletproof vest.” When Kimmel asked why he draws so much of Trump’s anger, Meyers offered one explanation: “Other than the fact you don’t like him, we think he would want to hang out with you. I think he sees us as a couple of dorks and even if we were fans of his he would have no respect for us.” Slipping into character as Trump, Meyers suggested the president is somewhat obsessed with Kimmel: “I think he has a pizza oven [...] you know he knows Larry David and Conan? He’s got a lot of famous friends. His parties sound awesome.” Back as himself, Meyers said: “He just looks at us, and he’s like, ‘Ugh.’” Kimmel noted that Trump “never seems to get upset” with “The Daily Show” host Jon Stewart either, although he does occasionally target Meyers. Kimmel wondered whether Trump only knows how to watch traditional broadcast networks and suggested Meyers’ later time slot may also shield him. “I think you are past his bedtime,” Kimmel told Meyers. Meyers, however, noted that when Trump does attack his show on social media, the timing suggests he may be watching live. “And it means the world to me,” Meyers said, adding Trump “watching linear television with the ads is so important.” Watch from the 12-minute mark here: By entering your email and clicking Sign Up, you're agreeing to let us send you customized marketing messages about us and our advertising partners.
