What Princess Diana's Brother Thinks About The Rift Between Prince William And Prince Harry

Princess Diana‘s brother, Charles Spencer, is weighing in on the ongoing rift between Prince William and Prince Harry. “I think there is a perception in the media that I am on Harry’s side. Well, I’m on my deceased sister’s sons’ side, both of them,” Spencer said in a sit-down interview with the BBC, released on Sunday in support of his book about Diana, called “Swan Song: Diana, My Sister.” “And if either of them wanted anything, then I’d be equally there for them,” the historian added. “And I never get involved in one camp or the other, except as a benign figure, I hope.” When speaking on Harry and William’s fractured relationship, Spencer said there is a “lot of reasons on both sides” why things “got to this stage.” “I hope one day it’s resolved, but I don’t know all,” he shared. “I certainly don’t know what’s been done in the finer detail, and so I would feel intrusive if I got more involved than to say of course a mother would want her two sons to be happy together and love each other.” In a new interview with People magazine, Spencer opened up about another major topic royal watchers are likely curious about: when the author told the brothers about the book. “I told them at the same time, and all I would say is one was... So all four of them [William; Harry; and Charles Spencer’s sisters, Sarah and Jane], I told them exactly the same time,” Spencer said. “And I can say that Harry is completely fine about it.” “[Harry] said, I hope there’s nothing embarrassing about him in it. I said, ‘There isn’t.’ I think they were actually worried where I was going up to with the book,” the historian shared, adding that the book “pretty much ends in 1997 with Diana’s death.” “But I could reassure both of them that they’re of course in the book, but really as examples of two little boys who had the most exceptional mother, I’m not in any way compromising their privacy at all,” he added. Spencer’s book was published Tuesday ahead of the 30th anniversary of Diana’s death ― Aug. 31, 1997.
