There is one class of insider transactions that catches my attention more than others. That's insider buys. It's because insider sales are often quite complex, involving tax implications and estate planning. However, insider purchases are fairly straightforward. If an insider is buying, they are backing their conviction in a company's stock with their own money. Nonetheless, retail investors shouldn't blindly follow suit. Instead, they should review a company's fundamentals. With that in mind, let's have a closer look at Truist Financial (TFC). First, let's review how TFC stock has performed in recent years. Since 2021, TFC stock has generated a total return of 15%, equating to a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 2.9%. The S&P 500, meanwhile, has delivered an 88% total return, with a 13.4% CAGR. Turning to its key metrics, TFC's core fundamentals paint a mixed picture. As for the positives, the company has aggressively bought back shares. Its current $5 billion share repurchase program has enabled the company to reduce its overall share count by 8.5% over the last five years. Second, TFC has a current dividend yield of 4.3%, which will appeal to income-oriented investors. Last, insider purchases, including CEO Michael Lyon's $1.0 million purchase, demonstrate management's confidence. On the flip side, there are some concerns. For one, TFC's net interest margin (NIM) is at 2.98%. That's below average and falling. In addition, credit quality could be weakening as borrowers continue to face macroeconomic challenges from rising prices. In summary, investors must weigh this mixed picture. Income-oriented investors may be tempted by the company's stout dividend yield and encouraged by insider buying, while skeptical investors may view the stock as underperforming and facing macroeconomic headwinds.
