Vice President JD Vance pushed back against the idea that it was the government’s job to regulate artificial intelligence, invoking Frankenstein’s monster while talking about top AI bosses’ recent pleas for help putting guardrails around the technology.

Over the weekend, Anthropic co-founder Dario Amodei called on his industry peers to “slow down” the pace of AI development and on Washington, D.C., to help coordinate a global oversight effort to protect the public from the potential of a digital doomsday scenario.

Though Vance addressed Amodei’s concerns during an AI summit in Los Angeles on Tuesday, the vice president seemed to say any problems caused by AI’s ultra-rapid development were the tech bosses’ and theirs alone.

“Why is it that the people who are at the frontier of the AI economy are throwing up their hands and saying, ‘Well, we’ve built Frankenstein, and the solution to Frankenstein, apparently, is to create a one-world governance structure for artificial intelligence’?” he asked Chamath Palihapitiya of the “All-In Podcast.”

Vance went on, “What I would say to those people: if you’re building Frankenstein, stop, or maybe build, you know, if the cat is out of the bag, then build the defensive mechanism against Frankenstein.”

Though the vice president took a laissez-faire stance, his perspective on AI’s potential dangers sharply contrasted with President Donald Trump’s comments a day earlier.

Dismissing AI anxieties as he defended his administration’s hands-off approach to tech regulation in a post on Truth Social Monday, the president wrote that, “AI taking over the world, destroying humanity, and all other things bad, is a HOAX” and that the tech would be “the greatest economic development engine in history – bigger than oil, gold, diamonds, or even the internet.”

In a separate post about AI earlier that day, Trump was true to form as he suggested, “The only control or ‘guardrails’ that AI needs is a STRONG AND SMART (High IQ!) PRESIDENT, and the U.S.A. has that, in spades!”
