Tempers exploded during a late night GOP meeting in Speaker Mike Johnson’s (R-La.) office and two House members stormed out, The Washington Sun reported Wednesday.

Rep. Andy Harris (R-Md.) aimed to discuss a bill to suspend a gas tax through the midterms. That prompted Rep. Sam Graves (R-Mo.) to present a 2022 tweet in which Harris criticized then-President Joe Biden for wanting to do the same, multiple sources in the room told the Sun (formerly NOTUS).

Here’s how the rest of it went down, according to the insiders:

“This is fucking war!” Harris raged, banging on the desk. He made his way in a huff to the door before being talked back by Johnson.

Rep. Clay Higgins (R-La.) then confronted Graves to defend Harris.

“Why do you have to come at him personally?” Higgins snapped at Graves. “You disrespectful fool!”

Higgins and Harris reportedly stomped out of the meeting.

Politico reported that the push to temporarily suspend the federal tax failed.

And the alleged feuding wasn’t over. Higgins later blamed Graves for the killed bill on social media.

“Establishment elitist Sam Graves… lifetime Heritage score of 69… just killed the Freedom Caucus bill that would have canceled the federal fuel tax for 3 months,” Higgins wrote. “Our intention was to bring the bill to the House floor tomorrow night. Man wants his taxes. And he was rude about it. Unbelievable. The swamp is fighting hard to come back.”

It’s a time of high tension in the GOP.

According to a New York Times-Siena University poll released this week, the party was 8 points behind Democrats on a generic question asking voters which party they will support for Congress in their district.

Democrats are reportedly likely to retake the House and some prediction markets are now saying a Senate flip for the Dems is more probable than not.

President Donald Trump’s prolonged war against Iran and high fuel prices aren’t helping the GOP’s cause any.
