“Daily Show” correspondent Josh Johnson offered an accurate yet unsettling comparison to describe President Donald Trump’s lack of knowledge about artificial intelligence.

“It’s technology, no different than when television was – they said the movies would be out of business, and the radio came, and something else was going to be gone,” Trump said about AI during a GBN interview earlier this month. “And it’s always everything is — people should think more positively.”

“Did this man just compare AI to the radio?” Johnson asked.

Johnson also likened Trump’s knowledge of AI to the mayor from “Jaws” not knowing what sharks were.

“No, no, it’s safe to swim, everyone. This is just like when television came along,” Johnson said.

Trump has given several baffling answers when asked about recent warnings from leaders in the AI industry. He has said repeatedly that the technology needs no guardrails because all the country needs is a “high IQ president,” which he claims the U.S. has.

Rival CEOs Sam Altman of OpenAI, Dario Amodei of Anthropic and Elon Musk of xAI have all called for the development of the technology to be slowed down. At first, Johnson seemed relieved by this update.

“If the people want AI to have guardrails and the CEOs of the AI companies want AI to have guardrails, then it sounds like AI is going to get some guardrails,” Johnson said before playing a news clip highlighting Trump’s Truth Social post rejecting calls for AI regulations.

“I did forget for a second that he was president,” Johnson added.
