House Speaker Mike Johnson made a bold statement about Iran’s leaders that led many people on social media to declare that, yes, irony is dead.

The Louisiana Republican was speaking to reporters on Tuesday when he explained the challenges the Trump administration is having in negotiating with Iranian leaders over the ongoing war and gave a major reason why.

“The problem has been, and the reason we’ve been frustrated, is that the Iranians simply cannot be trusted,” Johnson said. “They’ll sit at a negotiation table and say something, then walk away and do the opposite.”

It was what Johnson said next that went viral.

“For some of them, it’s apparently part of their religion that they can just lie to someone they disagree with. So, that’s been the difficult thing,” Johnson said with a straight face.

He then promised that the president “has steady hands at the wheel” and is “working every day to try to resolve this and negotiate it in a way that is in the best interest of the American people and freedom-loving people around the world.”

Considering that Johnson’s fearless leader, Donald Trump, is pretty much known for his large catalog of lies, many people on social media felt obliged to point out the double standard.

Oh the irony https://t.co/R9fnoD3WwY

I doubt there is any Iranian who lies as much as Donald Trump https://t.co/eKA05GFc5f

We've been saying the same thing about MAGA 'Christians' https://t.co/6C1WLnUfRA

That Must Be Your Religion Because That's ALL YOU DO. https://t.co/seEJiCAqoe

Geez isn't Trump doing the exact same thing with fucking everything he says one thing that does another. Just look at the bullshit with Canada I imagine he's doing the same kind of bullshit with Iran https://t.co/cN8GIwz9Ua

So, by that logic, what religion does Trump follow? I am genuinely curious at this point.. https://t.co/bTeX0li4s4

America to Johnson: it's apparently endemic to the GOP to lie about EVERYTHING, ALL THE TIME! https://t.co/YYwTUdBQUU

Irony is dead. https://t.co/y9ZAXSWnSH
