The jury in the Lindsay Clancy trial told Judge William Sullivan on Tuesday morning that they were unable to reach a unanimous decision. The judge instructed them to continue deliberating.

“I know that this was a long trial,” Sullivan told the jury, which is made up of nine women and three men. “I know there were over 80 witnesses, there were over 300 exhibits. But because of that, I’m going to ask you to go back out, keeping in mind all the instructions that I gave you. To go out and to continue your deliberations at this time.”

When the jury told the judge they were deadlocked, they had been deliberating for nearly 18 hours over four days.

Clancy is on trial for allegedly murdering her three children. She has pleaded not guilty for reason of insanity, and the jury must decide if she is criminally responsible for the deaths or not.

If the jury fails to come to a unanimous decision, the trial could end in a mistrial.

There are five verdicts the jurors are considering for Clancy: guilty of first-degree murder, guilty of second-degree murder, guilty of manslaughter, not guilty by lack of criminal responsibility or not guilty.

During the trial, the defense didn’t argue whether or not Clancy killed her children in 2023. Instead, they argued that she was suffering from postpartum depression and psychosis when she did so and thus shouldn’t be held criminally responsible. The prosecution, however, argued that not only was she of sound mind and knew right from wrong when she killed her children, but that she planned the killings and should be found guilty.

The trial has been televised, causing it to become a public spectacle, mainly on social media. Many mothers have shown sympathy for Clancy, sharing their own stories of postpartum psychosis on social media, while others believe anyone who kills their children should be in prison. Social media has also been a breeding ground for conspiracy theories, with many people voicing their belief that Clancy’s ex-husband actually killed the children.

Patrick Clancy’s lawyer told CNN last week that anyone saying Patrick Clancy killed his children “should be on notice.”

“The facts are indisputable: Patrick Clancy has suffered an unspeakable and unimaginable loss,” Howard Cooper told CNN. “Unfortunately, the tragedy Patrick has experienced has been compounded by patently false, defamatory, and injurious public statements. The individuals making those statements — from minor influencers to major celebrities — should be on notice that their despicable actions and false, defamatory statements have caused real life consequences to the health and safety of Patrick and his family.”

If found guilty, Lindsay Clancy faces life in prison without the possibility of parole. If she is found not guilty, she will be committed to a mental health facility.
