(NewsNation) — Wildfires in eastern Washington state have forced tens of thousands from their homes and scorched more than 250,000 acres.

Firefighters in the Spokane area continue to battle the blaze, which has destroyed at least 600 structures so far. Damage assessment crews are working to collect more specific information on the destruction caused by the fires.

 Eastern Washington wildfire forces evacuations and destroys homes 

Cooler temperatures and higher humidity on Sunday allowed firefighters to make significant gains on the Old Trails and Fairview fires, with the Autumn Lane fire remaining active. Suppression efforts are continuing, authorities said Monday.

A temporary flight restriction has been put in place over the fires, with 26 reported drone incursions in the fire. Authorities warned that such incursions can impact firefighting efforts, with the potential to shut down aerial fire suppression for safety reasons.

The fires in and around Spokane, the state's second-largest city, burned about 8.2 square miles over the weekend and were among dozens of wildfires across the Western U.S. that stretched the ability of federal, state and local agencies to fight them.

A total of about 390 square miles has burned across the state, and some of the fires, including those in the Spokane area, have not been contained.

At this time, there have been no reports of injuries or people unaccounted for.

Local fire officials are telling residents to help out their neighbors as people are forced to leave their homes behind while the fires rage on.

"Reach out to someone you know who has been affected. Offer a meal, a place to stay, help with errands, or simply let them know they are not alone. Small acts of kindness can make a bigger difference than you realize," read a post from the Spokane County Fire District 9.

Washington Rep. Michael Baumgartner wrote on X that he has spoken with DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin and Washington state Gov. Bob Ferguson to get federal assistance for the wildfire.

Ferguson later confirmed those conversations and said he would be requesting assistance and a federal emergency declaration in order to mobilize federal resources to meet those needs. The governor on Sunday added he had been in contact with President Donald Trump and Mullin.
