Shop the sandal likes of Teva, Skechers, Keens, and more for long-distance walking.

For Rover dog walker Rachel Millman, whatever properties an individual needs in a long-distance sneaker, they should also seek out in a sandal. This means elements like a good arch support, proper cushioning, and a width that accommodates your exact foot.

Milman and Rover dog sitter/walker Kimberly Reckles both agree that closed-toe sandals are typically best for their unique walking purposes, just for the added safety when it comes to handling dogs and maneuvering around obstacles — though this might not necessarily be a requirement for you.

Ahead, take a look at the sandals and shoe brands that Reckles and Milman say they’ll be wearing on their long walks when temperatures are high.

Reckles said that she loves the Teva Tirra Sport sandals for their closed-toe cap, cushion comfort and support, and easy slip-on back strap. "They're also durable," she said. The Tirras have a grippy traction outer sole and a secure heel lock, so you'll never have to worry about your sandal flying off mid-walk. Available in up to five colorways and women's sizes 5–11 (with half sizes included), these sporty Tevas also feature a cushy foam midsole for arch support and comfort.

Milman also recommended Chacos as a brand to explore, so we selected the Z/Cloud sandal, a more cushioned version of the brand’s classic “Z” shoe that features an extra layer of ultra-soft polyurethane on the mid-sole. Like many of Chaco's sandals, they promise a truly customized and secure fit thanks to the criss-crossed adjustable straps that wrap around the top of the foot and midsole. They have a treaded rubber outsole and come in sizes for both men and women, along with tons of strap colors and patterns.

Get them from Chacos for $74.99+ in women's sizes and from REI for $105 in men's sizes.

"These provide great support and a secure fit," Reckles said of the Keen Whisper Lattice sandals, a hybrid shoe that uses stretchy crisscross straps to hug the foot and features a lightweight foam cushioning footbed for a contoured fit and all-day support. Reckles also appreciates how the Whisper Lattices slip on easily, are great in water, and are easy to clean. You can find these comfy sandals in four colorways and women's whole and half sizes 5–12.

Because both Reckles and Millman recommend Teva, we’re also choosing to feature this unique sneaker-sandal hybrid that promises the breathability of a sandal and the design functionality of a traditional walking sneaker. Teva says that these shoes are "engineered with a technical tread that disperses water underfoot" and offer tree frog-like traction, so they're great for slick surfaces. Shop them in sizes for both men and women and two color options.

Get them from REI for $110 in men's sizes and women's sizes.

Millman suggests her Bedrock Mountain clogs, an all-season shoe that's capable of trekking on both city sidewalks and trails. They have a rubber toe cap, three adjustment points for the perfectly snug fit, and a cushioned, polyurethane footbed that anatomically molds to your feet. You can shop the Mountain Clogs in sizes for both men and women and up to three colors.

Get them from REI for $160 in women's and $175 in men's.

If you don't want to struggle into a pair of sandals with buckles and straps, Reckles likes the Skechers Go Walk Arch Fit slip-ons that are easy to slide into and, in her words, are a good water shoe. "These provide support and comfort [and] they're constructed of cool, breathable material," she said. Available in two colors and women's sizes 5–12, these machine-washable, medium-width sandals feature expandable, stretchy straps and a quilted "Goga Mat" cushioned footbed, which the brand calls responsive and shock-absorbing, with an outer sole.

Based on Millman’s enthusiasm for Teva, we have to call out a particular style that our shopping editors love. The Original Universal Teva sandal is a sporty and strappy classic that promises a secure fit, supportive comfort, and a reliable, grippy outsole that will keep you from slipping. Aside from extensive size offerings for women, the Originals are loved for their endless patterns and color options.

Millman also mentioned Birkenstocks, which we've featured extensively for their undeniable comfort. While Millman didn't cite a specific style, a board-certified podiatrist previously suggested this cushioned version of the Birkenstock classic, the Arizona sandal, for those recovering from various foot conditions. (It may also be worth mentioning that Birkenstocks have helped heal my father's case of chronic plantar fasciitis.)

Like many of the brand's footwear offerings, these iconic sandals feature the signature Birkenstock contoured footbed, an anatomically designed insole that offers longitudinal arch support running along the sides of the footbed for greater stability. This is supplemented with transverse arch support, a contour that runs along the middle of the footbed to help promote better alignment, and a deep and cradling heel cup keeps the heel’s natural cushioning right under the heel bone to also help prevent potential pain. Shop these in gender-neutral sizes, two leather types, and several colors.

Get them from Nordstrom for $99+ in men's and $154.95 in women's.
