Exes Get Real About What Happened To Their "One That Got Away," And It's Not What I Expected

βIt was electric, like nothing Iβd ever experienced before.β As a full-time writer at BuzzFeed, I cover books, sex, relationships, sitcoms, and all things pop culture. "Years later, he called me after seeing our mutual friend one afternoon. He said he was very happy with his current life, but he wanted me to know that the time we shared was among the best of his life. I was newly engaged to my amazing husband, but I agreed with him. Itβs now been 32 years since we broke up, and I still think of him often. My adult son matches his personality to a T (he is not his son, not even close), and unknowingly even frequented the same college apartment my ex had lived in years earlier. The mutual friend who introduced us is still close with both of us, and we always ask about each other. One night, after a few drinks, I told her that if, heaven forbid, we were both widowed someday, I believe weβd find our way back to each other. She agreed. I wish him and his family happiness, and I love my husband to the ends of the earth. Itβs just strange sometimes. I feel like I have two soul mates."
