Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) on Monday said President Trump’s withdrawal from former President Obama’s nuclear deal with Iran left the country “weeks from nuclear breakout.”

Wasserman Schultz blasted the reported memorandum of understanding between the U.S. and Iran, which would involve unfreezing Iranian assets and reopening the Strait of Hormuz. She argued Trump’s withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) in 2018 was the wrong choice.

“Let’s not put the cart before the horse,” she told CNN’s Pamela Brown on Monday afternoon. The reason that Donald Trump pulled us out of the JCPOA –– of Obama’s deal –– is because he said it was not a good deal. But what it did was it at least put Iran years from nuclear breakout, and him pulling us out left them weeks from nuclear breakout.”

Wasserman Schultz urged the Trump administration to ensure that Iran gives up its stockpile of enriched uranium, its missile capability and its pursuit of a nuclear weapon.

“If those things don’t happen, this is a failure,” the Florida Democrat said.

Trump on Monday said Iran’s enriched uranium could be given to the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission to be destroyed.

The comments came as both parties are negotiating an emerging deal to end the conflict and allow oil shipments to pass through the closed Strait of Hormuz. The deal would allow for a 60-day ceasefire extension to grant Iran and the U.S. time to determine the fate of Iran’s uranium.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Tuesday said Trump will “make a good deal or no deal, so on that everyone should be assured. But that may take a little while, I mean, a few more days.”

But these negotiations are on shaky ground Tuesday, as Iranian Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei warned that U.S. bases in the region are no longer safe after U.S. forces fired “defensive strikes” at Iranian boats. U.S. Central Command said the vessels were attempting to plant mines.

“America, in addition to no longer having a safe place for aggression and military bases in the region, is moving further away from its former status day by day,” Khamenei said in a statement.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry accused the U.S. of violating the ceasefire and blamed it “for all the consequences resulting from these aggressive and unjustified actions.”

Trump has said the negotiations are “proceeding nicely,” though Gen. Seyed Majid Mousavi, commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Aerospace Force, categorized the negotiations as a “pure loss” following the Monday strikes.
