Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin earned a heap of scorn after saying Wednesday, “For some reason, ICE has been demonized.”

The snippet of Mullin addressing agents and officers in a Police Week speech went viral as the Trump administration continues its polarizing crackdown on migrants.

People on X clapped back with sarcasm.

“The murders and civil rights abuses might have been part of the reason,” one person wrote, referring to the federal-agent killings of Americans Renee Good and Alex Pretti in Minneapolis.

“Weird how you kidnap people off the street or just shoot them and then you’re the bad guy. GFY…” another snarked.

“I think it might be related to arresting children and killing civilians, but idk,” someone else cracked.

Mullin, who replaced the reassigned Kristi Noem in March, now oversees an Immigration and Customs Enforcement department that faces intense scrutiny.

ICE has detained more than 6,000 children in Trump’s second term, according to a report in April.

During a peak moment of ICE deployments, 12 out of every 13 people arrested had no criminal record, according to data cited by the American Immigration Council.

As for public opinion, a February survey indicated that two-thirds of Americans said ICE has gone too far. In March, support for abolishing ICE reached 50%.

Mullin said that his agency’s personnel is “willing to pay the extra sacrifice for us to be safe, and yet, for some reason, ICE has been demonized.”

“I know morale has taken a absolute tank,” he said. “And I hate it. Because our attitude reflects everyday sacrifice that we get to truly show the American people because we have the greatest gift in the world. We get to protect the homeland.”
