These household heroes will save your furniture, rugs and clothes from any stain. Trust me.

Senior Wellness & Travel Editor, HuffPost

Between reflux and daycare germs, we’ve navigated our fair share of vomiting with our 12-month-old over the last year. Our dog is a 4-year-old golden retriever with a sensitive stomach and a penchant for nibbling on grass in the summer — for anyone who is familiar with the breed, that description is enough.

Needless to say, my husband and I have become pros at cleaning up incidents. We have treating and removing spots down to a science. Thankfully, there are a handful of go-to stain removers and products we use to get the job done quickly and effectively so we can get back to feeding them their daily serving of berries. These household heroes have never failed us (or our rugs, couch and carseat covers). Take a look below.

"I own one of these Little Green cleaners, and they are indeed supremely portable and carpet-saving (pet owners love them)," wrote former senior shopping editor Janie Campbell in a review. "Every time I spill food on my rug — this happens way too often — I just run for the Little Green, flip it on, spend a scant minute scrubbing, suction up the dirty water and then breathe a sigh of relief. It’s saved me from soy sauce, ketchup, salad dressing, dollops of of curry and more than one dropped cheeseburger."

The easy operation and portability are enhanced by the machine's large-capacity clean water tank, which can hold up to 48 ounces and tackle large-scale messes like vomit without interruption. The scrubbing and suctioning deep cleans stains beneath surface level, and your purchase comes with a spot and stain cleaner that can get rid of odors, too.

This stuff can tackle stains — including vomit, but also grease, food, coffee and more — on your clothes, carpets, linens and upholstery with ease, and it's EPA Safer Choice certified. You just have to make sure to spray it on ASAP, rub in and/or let it set, then clean your laundry or other item as usual. Easy-peasy, and reviewers refer to it as an "unsung hero" and "the best stain remover on the market."

Promising review: "I have a German Shepherd, and he puked the contents of his stomach onto a new rug. I cleared the ORANGE puke, wiped the area "clean," and sprayed this product. I wasn't very hopeful, but I looked at it later in the day, and the spot was gone!" —Angiebra

Dawn Powerwash dish spray hardly needs an introduction at this point. After giving it a Shopping Award in 2025, we now bow down to the “holy grail of dish soaps” — which, by the way, can also clean stains (like vomit) off of household surfaces and laundry.

Shopping writer and avid home cook Griffin Wynne found that Powerwash eliminated the need for scrubbing. “I truly spray down my scary pile [of dishes], wait a beat, and then the gross food bits just... fall off,” they wrote in a 2022 editor’s picks roundup. Users have also found massive success getting rid of carpet and upholstery stains, as well as clothing stains.

The spray, which has been called “magical,” “life changing” and “legit sorcery,” has three cleaning boosters and can remove 99% of grease and grime five times faster than other brands. The suds also activate on contact, and the spray functions lets a little go a long way and makes it easy to tackle larger surface areas. It’s ridiculously popular — 4.8 stars across over 137,000 ratings is nearly unheard of.

Like Dawn Powerwash, Scrub Daddy sponges also likely make you think of cleaning dishes first, but don't count them out for messes elsewhere. These sponges are great for scrubbing out stubborn stains with a cleaning agent, and have a scratch-free design that's safe to use on leather, carpets and other surfaces you want to protect.

Scrub Daddy sponges also last longer than typical cheap sponges, able to resist odor for up to eight weeks. Of course, after using them on vomit stains you'll want to sanitize them, but luckily, doing so is easy. Just throw them on the top rack of the dishwasher.

Promising review: "I have gotten a 16oz Bloody Mary spill out of a cream carpet. Gotten a red wine stain out from a course beige carpet. I have cats that sometimes vomit and this has gotten every single stain out from carpet to bedding to couches. Also works great on clothing stains! Could not survive the pet stains without this! My highest praises!!" —Lulahbel

It doesn't get much easier than this instant carpet spot remover that reviewers say "works like magic": Spray it on, blot it with the included cloth and watch the stains disappear. No rinsing, scrubbing or intense effort required. If that on its own wasn't enough to entice you, the spray also has no chemical odors and can work on carpet, upholstery, rugs and more (just do a patch test first). Plus, if you're trying to shop domestically, Folex is made in the United States.

Promising review: "My dog vomited (dark brown/greenish) on my cream rug (again) and I figured I would try this instead of the other methods I have tried (other carpet cleaners, professional cleaner, 91% hydrogen peroxide drop of dawn hot water wet vac, etc) that haven't worked. It arrived a day later so it had soaked for 24 hours, all I did was spray with this to the stain in the morning (vomit stains I am told is harder to get out than GI/#2 stains) and by the time I came home that evening it was completely gone and integrity and pattern of carpet totally intact, can't tell it was there. I am shocked and amazed. This stuff really works and is worth every penny. I wish I took a picture to show but truly amazed how well this removed the stain." —Carrie B.
