14 Classic Sitcoms That Have Yet To Get The Reboot, Revival, Or Spin-Off Treatment

How could there NOT BE a “Friends” revival in the works? I am an aspiring writer with a deep passion for all things TV and film! Post approved and edited by BuzzFeed Community Team I am actually really shocked that Seinfeld doesn’t have a follow-up of any kind. I can totally see a revival series featuring Jerry going through some kind of third-quarter life crisis, trying to figure out what to do now that he’s retired from being a stand-up comedian with adult-aged kids. Maybe Jerry could be planning his big comeback stage? I mean, this series can practically write itself. Parks & Recreation probably had the most satisfying, perfectly tied-up ending to a popular sitcom, so part of me is happy that it hasn’t been touched. However, the other part of me misses the crew’s chaotic dynamics. I can totally see a spin-off featuring a new parks & recs office in a different town, with small cameos from the original cast here and there. Another series I could see getting a spin-off rather than an entire reboot. The Brooklyn Nine-Nine universe is so large that it would be easy to come up with a new story tied to the original. For example, a spin-off about a young Captain Holt coming up through the NYPD, or even a series set in a different precinct, would work so well! Seriously, the possibilities are endless! I just need another cold open where suspects sing a '90s boy band hit. I know Frasier is a direct spin-off from Cheers, which actually got their own revival, but I personally would like to see the bar where everyone knows your name come back to life. Whether it’s a new set of regulars and a new bar owner or Ted Danson making a comeback as Sam Malone, I would love to see Cheers running again and be a place where everyone can escape their problems. I don’t think this series needs a revival, but I’m actually surprised that there isn’t at least a reboot with the same premise. A brand-new series featuring a modern live-in nanny in a rich family household seems very easy to recreate. Especially with this new generation of tech billionaires and social media influencers, having a nanny in these kinds of households would be comedy gold. Or I can see this taking the Bel-Air approach and becoming a dramatized version instead. Either way, it feels like a missed opportunity here. This series did get a few spin-offs, but they were released so long ago that a reboot now seems possible. Of course, no one could ever replace the brilliance of the original squad, but I wouldn’t be mad at the idea of a new set of “golden girls” dealing with this era filled with AI and everyone glued to their phones. Now, I don’t know if there is a chance that this could happen, but I can see it as worth considering. This one is harder to envision getting a revival of any kind, given issues with some of the original cast, but I believe it’s still possible. I could see a spin-off focusing more on the Tool Time show, where producers want to revive the show — see what I did there — and bring back Tim Taylor and Al Borland as hosts. Of course, Tim Allen has been busy with his newest show and voicing Buzz in Toy Story 5, so I can understand why this revival hasn’t been a priority. This series was very long, running for a whopping 11 seasons! Even with its long run, the show managed to have a very unsatisfying ending. Personally, I felt like most of the characters didn’t get any real proper closure. More than anything, I want justice for Haley, who had such a cool character growth moment in the mid-seasons, only to fall out of existence in the last couple of seasons. A revival with Haley taking the center stage as the new matriarch just feels like a great opportunity here. Before Ed O’Neill became the no-nonsense patriarch Jay Pritchett in Modern Family, he played another iconic misanthropic father, Al Bundy in Married…With Children. While significant time has passed since the series aired, a reboot featuring a different dysfunctional family wouldn’t be completely out there. Especially since, in this day and age, being “married with children” looks a little different than it did in the ’80s. The hijinks with the Mowry twins were always fun, and I miss watching reruns of this sitcom late at night on Nick@Nite. I know there were efforts to actually get a revival, but that doesn’t seem to be happening anytime soon. I can already imagine a revival focusing on Tamera, living the single life in her dad’s house, and allowing Tia’s family to move in after some kind of crisis. Forced to live together again in the same house, but having to navigate it all as parents. Instead of a revival or reboot, this series should get a spin-off. Whether it’s a story focusing on Dina running the new Cloud9 warehouse or following the story of Glenn’s new hardware store, the possibilities are endless. Above all else, this spin-off series absolutely needs to feature Sandra, who became one of the GOAT characters to come out out of the series. With how the series ended, I can see a revival happening. The finale even hints at it when it shows the Heck children’s futures. Axl ends up having three kids of his own, so I can see a revival focusing on Axl’s life as a middle-class working father. Maybe this series could get the Malcolm in the Middle treatment and get a short four-episode revival special too. Side Note: Okay, growing up, I actually believed The "Middle" and "Malcolm in the Middle" were the same. You cannot deny the similarities. A classic TV sitcom that had a revival in the works, but was put on hold indefinitely. I could see the various directions the revival could go with how the series left off. Our favorite father is now retired from managing Power Aviation, and his son, Max, is now taking over the business. I can already imagine all the shenanigans going on, with George not easily adjusting to retirement. I know technically Friends had the spin-off, Joey, which followed our favorite soap opera star in LA. But it sadly wasn’t well received, and it’s been a significant amount of time since that series even ended, so a sequel of some kind feels a bit long overdue. I believe Emma is now the age that the original core six were when the original series started. It would be great to see either Emma or the twins back in Monica’s rent-controlled apartment in New York, which was truly a freakin’ steal.
