Fox News Poll Shows Dems Leading On Key Issue For First Time Since 2010

A Fox News poll released Wednesday shows President Donald Trump and the GOP have lost considerable support from voters, spelling potential disaster for the Republicans ahead of this year’s midterms, while Democrats are leading on one key issue for the first time since 2010. The survey was conducted between April 17 and April 20 and polled 1,001 registered voters across the U.S. It found that 56% of them believe the Trump administration has done a poor job of managing the federal government, including 4 in 10 non-MAGA Republicans. The survey also showed that 58% of voters disapprove of Trump’s overall job performance. Asked whether Republicans or Democrats would do a better job at handling the U.S. economy, 52% said Democrats. This is the first time voters have expressed as much since 2010, in the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis under then-President Barack Obama. The results suggest a major shift in only a few years. Republicans were favored by double digits regarding the economy in 2022, and Trump vowed ahead of the 2024 election to bring down costs and inflation. However, the Labor Department confirmed earlier this month that costs have risen by 3.3% from only a year ago, largely driven by surging gas prices after Trump launched his Middle East war in February. In the recent poll, only 10% of voters described their personal financial situation as “excellent,” while 28% described their situation as “poor.” Forty-one percent of voters also described “economic conditions today” as “poor.” The responses to one related question were arguably even worse. Asked if the economy is getting better or worse for voters and their families, a staggering 70% said worse. The survey also found that 62% of voters called grocery prices a “major problem,” while 60% said gas prices were a major issue as well. Trump has dismissed the affordability crisis as a “con job,” to the frustration of his own base. The president and Republicans touted their “big, beautiful” bill last year as the answer to widespread concerns about the economy. It is projected to kick millions of people off Medicaid and imposed strict new eligibility requirements on federal food assistance. In the survey, 55% of voters said that healthcare costs have become a major problem for them, and 52% said housing costs were also a major issue. Trump admitted in January, “I want to drive house prices up” to protect property values for current owners. The poll is yet another indicator that Republicans will have a difficult time in the midterms. Numerous conservative lawmakers and pundits, including current and former Fox News hosts, have issued dire warnings to the GOP about potential Democratic victories.
