CNN data analyst Harry Enten said Wednesday that President Donald Trump’s dismal approval rating means Democrats will retake the House and Senate ― if history is any indication. Enten: The only two I could find who had a sub -15 point net approval rating besides Trump, are Harry S Truman in 1946 and George W. Bush going into the 2006 election. You know what happened? Their parties lost not just the house but the senate as well pic.twitter.com/ngxm9s6rlA “The Source” host Kaitlan Collins showed her stat-wonk colleague a graphic of the president’s 32% approval and 67% disapproval marks in a CNN poll and asked, “What are we seeing in these numbers?” “This, to me, is part of a larger picture, historically speaking, where you go back in time and you look at any of the presidents who are anywhere close to how unpopular Trump is at this point going into a midterm election,” Enten said. “The only two I could find who had a sub — minus-15-point net approval rating besides Trump are Harry S. Truman in 1946” and George W. Bush in 2006. “You know what happened in both those elections?” Enten asked. “Their parties lost not just the House but the Senate as well. And of course that’s what we’re talking about right here.” Enten noted that CNN’s polling wasn’t an outlier, as he displayed similar results from other prominent pollsters. “Net approval rating” is determined by subtracting the disapproval percentage from the approval percentage. So in CNN’s case, it’s -35 points. In any analysis, that’s a negative for Trump, who has exhorted supporters to vote as if he were on the ballot. One data-driven forecaster on Wednesday put the Democrats’ chances of winning the House at 78% and the Senate at 56%.
