People Are Sharing The Biggest Recession Indicators They’ve Noticed As Of Late, And It Is BLEAK

As a full-time writer at BuzzFeed Canada, I cover all things pop culture and food. "I remember seeing concerts for around $10 back in the late '70s, early '80s. 10 years later, they were going for over $100, wild." "My lawyer called me today asking if I needed any lawyer needs. Not even kidding. This is a recession, folks." "My partner and I recently stopped at a Burger King. Since we were starving and didn't think much of it, I ordered two large combo meals. $38 fucking dollars. For cheeseburgers, cold fries, and a Coke. $38 dollars. I was in shock and drove off. And OFC, there were just two employees working the entire restaurant. One on the grill and one at the window. I need to understand how they stay in business." "Man, for real — I'm so exhausted and in need of a vacation or some kind of break. I'm lucky in that I have a great job, but that makes me feel the need to work that much harder so that I can keep this job. Those of us who went through the '08 recession are starting to feel the fear and doing whatever we can to wedge ourselves into our jobs to hunker down." "That's me, an older millennial who's been around the block since the '08 recession shit show. I am on so many anti-anxiety meds that I have a little card that has them all written down in my wallet so I can remember them all if a doctor or someone should ask what medicines I'm currently taking. This only started over the past 18 months or so when the panic attacks began, and then I needed medication to function. I was cruising through life before then!" "My 41-year-old friend just joined. 41! I had to look it up to see if that was even possible! 42 is the cutoff." "You're right. I was just getting frustrated that three different books I wanted to read on Libby had multi-week waitlists. I hadn't even considered this might be a recession indicator." "Beef-based fast food restaurants like McDonald's, Burger King, Carl's Jr., etc., are heavily pushing chicken products in all their advertisements and value menus. Heck, even Taco Bell has started pushing chicken crunch wraps and burritos in their marketing lately. Moral of the story, chicken is cheaper than beef, therefore they can source it for cheaper." "Kinda spooky you mention this. A coworker who's vested into his 401(k) and IRA for 40+ years has been talking about how expensive fuel is getting. So much so that he no longer drives his truck to work and either takes a bike or his wife's RAV4 hybrid, since it gets amazing fuel mileage. Dude has millions in his accounts, is close to retirement, and is complaining about fuel costs." "A 20-story-or-so commercial building was built over the course of two years just down the street from where I live in Seattle. They shut down a major street for years while working on this building. They finished this building 2 years ago, and there still isn't a single business in this building. The only people I have ever seen inside are security guards making sure no one is squatting in there." Note: Some responses have been edited for length and/or clarity.
