Cute cardigans, statement coats, trendy jeans, and absurdly cute dresses galore.

As a Senior Shopping Writer at BuzzFeed, I specialize in a broad range of topics, including beauty, cleaning, fashion, personal care, home, fitness, and my beloved “TikTok made me buy it.” My work has been featured across lifestyle and writing publications during my ten years in the digital media space, including Bustle, HuffPost, HelloGiggles, and The Washington Post.

In case you don't know, it works like this: Each month, you choose six items for $98 from their massive collections to wear, which are shipped to you in a cloth bag. You can wear them for a month and either send them back dirty (they wash all returned items!) or purchase and keep them. Anything you return is easy to drop off at UPS with an included return label, at which point you'll "unlock" the six picks for your next cycle.

BuzzFeed contributor/my ride-or-die Ashley Schumacher told me about it, and was having so much fun that I had to give it a go, too. I don't consider myself particularly stylish, but I luuurrrve clothes, and I'm in my 30s and finally ~feeling myself~, so I figured it was time to shake things up a bit. Enter Nuuly, which has let me rotate all kinds of practical, whimsical, and showstopping pieces without breaking the bank!

Those back-to-school vibes are contagious, and it puts that little itch to break your budget that is too strong not to scratch. For those of us who spend a lot on clothing, a little under $100 each month for a new temporary wardrobe is a very effective cost-saving measure 👀.

Fall is always the season that I'm like, "Can I pull off cheetah print??" The answer is usually no, but that does not stop me from checking every single year!!!

You're going to need options! Some days are long sleeve + jeans days, others are swishy skirt + cardigan days, and some are very large coat + chic new dress days — it's impossible fashion math, and having a few fun pieces for layering makes it easier to do.

This is my most beloved coat, which I tried almost as a joke in late 2024?? At the beginning of the rental month, I was like, "Oh, fun!" At the end of the month, I was like, "We can never be parted." And it was a bargain — it's a $200 coat, and I'm pretty sure I paid about $120 for it, since it had been rented before! On the flip side, I've tried probably five other coats from Nuuly that were so fun to have for certain times of the year for special events, but had no business being in my permanent wardrobe.

I'll tell you what I haven't done in the past few years — not once have I bought a nice coat and let it gather dust in my closet! Instead of buying coats from the rack, I test them from Nuuly first, and after wearing them for a few weeks, I know I'll get my money's worth if I buy it.

Not me smuggling an entire Nuuly haul to London last year!!! This has saved my budget so many times — instead of buying things I need for a trip, like dresses for nice dinners or hiking coats for adventures, I just rent instead.

"I've been using this subscription for a few years on and off, depending on my plans for the month. And some of my most stylish friends use it on the reg. In the above left pic I'm wearing a Farm Rio x Anthropologie dress I packed for a March 2.5-week trip to Vietnam and Malaysia. It was much cooler in Vietnam than in Malaysia (I'm in humid Kuala Lumpur here), and the number of pieces gave me some flexibility to dress for the two climates. And I again used the service for a New Year's Havana trip where, yes, I took a convertible car tour in *another* Farm Rio dress. And! Nuuly recently launched a Rent for Travel section to make it even easier on you."

Nuuly has a MAAASSSIVE section for wedding guests, including events like bridal showers, rehearsal dinners, and bachelorettes. They even have sections separating different wedding themes, from "city" to "mountain" to "rustic," plus different dress codes, like casual, formal, black tie, and cocktail. Renting is about to make your credit card bill during wedding season look a lotttt less 😬.

Your wallet is going to be so relieved when you skip pricey dresses and coats and go for a $20 rental fix instead! As someone who acts like extroverting during the holiday season is a full-time job, this is a godsend. Every year, I get at least one sparkly dress for a holiday formal, at least one statement coat for New Year's, and fill in any other festive gaps with my other four clothing slots.

(Here's the sparkly Anthropologie dress in the first image here and here's the Unreal Fur statement coat in the second image.)

They've always had clothes in this price range, but now they're even easier to comb through! So essentially, you can spend $20 on each piece to rent things that are in the $500–$800 range, and look extra fabulous without even making a dent in your bank account.

Pictured here are a $395 LoveShackFancy dress, a $489 Baum und Pferdgarten overcoat, and a $495 Sachin & Babi dress.

We live in a world where our taste can change FAST, depending on what's trending around us or what catches our eye. If you're someone who gets bored with their wardrobe quickly, this is like a cheat code to a whole new closet every month without letting any pieces go to waste!

You can even buy gently used items Nuuly is taking out of rotation on their Thrift Shop. (Just note, you need an active rental subscription to buy anything, since it ships with your rented clothes!)

Buying nice clothes when you're pregnant is a scam! Nuuly saved me for the entire holiday season when my creature was in utero — I wore SO many beautiful pieces without wasting money and space, since I was never going to wear them again. I also found some INCREDIBLE "staple" maternity pieces that were worth buying to have them on hand throughout the pregnancy.

(Here's Susana Monaco dress in the first image, and here's the Erika Pena dress in the second image. Note that the second one wasn't a maternity dress, but Nuuly even has a section for loose and flowing "maternity adjacent" clothes in the maternity section!)

Each shipment comes in a cloth bag like the one above, with a return label already included. You can stick it right onto the bag and take it to UPS when it's time to return it. Once UPS scans it, Nuuly gets a notification, and your next cycle of clothing rental is unlocked!

I can't tell you how many times I've been on the fence about something and then seen someone living their best life in it and been like, "YUP. In the cart!" Or how many times I've seen someone write something like, "If you can't handle scratchy fabrics, avoid!!" and pulled it right out.

Nuuly lets you keep your subscription without charging you as long as you've returned all your clothes and hit the "pause" button before your next cycle begins. This is especially a boon for me during months when I've had nothing to get dressed up for — for instance, the first few months of my son's life, which were spent in a FROZEN TUNDRA in NYC where nobody was leaving their apartments, let alone people with fresh babies!! And the best part is that if you change your mind, you can unpause and start a new cycle at any point.

But if you guys rent out the sparkly dresses this holiday season before I get a chance at them, watch your very chic backs!!!!
