“As a result, the fulfilment of contracts to publish my work in the UK could now constitute a serious criminal offence.”

Rooney, author of best-sellers including Normal People and Conversation With Friends, announced last year that she would be contributing her royalties from her books and their BBC adaptations to the group.

The UK banned Palestine Action in July 2025, proscribing it as a terrorist organisation, stating a “long history” of criminal damage. The ban made membership, or support of, the group a criminal offence with up to 14 years in prison.

On the Palestine Action website, it is described as a movement “committed to ending global participation in Israel’s genocidal and apartheid regime.”

“Using disruptive tactics, Palestine Action targets corporate enablers of the Israeli military-industrial complex and seeks to make it impossible for these companies to profit from the oppression of Palestinians," it adds.

“After a process of consultation and deliberation, and with my full agreement, my publisher Faber has therefore determined that it can no longer supply my work within the UK," she said.

“I have made every effort to be honest with the public about my beliefs and intentions, and I am wholly prepared to accept the consequences.”
