Becca is the Trends Editor at BuzzFeed, where she covers the latest in lifestyle, culture and travel, spotlighting the moments that shape how we live, work, and play. Enter the Pro Filt’r Fluid Flex Natural Matte Longwear Foundation, which comes in a staggering 50 shades. If you’re staring at that lineup thinking Great, but I don’t know where to start, Fenty has introduced an online shade matcher that uses a selfie to point you towards your match. Naturally, we decided to put it to the test. Three BuzzFeeders with different skin types, different levels of foundation expertise, and very different feelings about wearing a full face all blind-ordered their shades using Fenty’s online matcher. We then put the foundation to the test to see if it actually passes the longevity test. I have combination skin, with an oily T-zone but dry, tight cheeks and smile lines. I don’t usually wear a full face of foundation either – I’m much more of a lightweight BB or CC cream and concealer person – so my biggest fear was ending up with something heavy and cakey. I’d only ever tried Fenty’s Gloss Bomb before, which I loved, so I was excited to finally try the foundation. To my surprise, I think the matcher did a pretty decent job. I selected ‘I’m not sure’ for my undertone and stuck with the first shade it suggested, 196N. I could probably go a shade lighter in winter (especially in this country where we lack sunshine 80% of the year), but I could definitely make this work. The only thing that threw me off was the soft filter on the website, which made me question how accurately I was seeing my own skin. Still, I decided to “trust the process”, as they say, and it paid off. It gave me that ‘no-makeup makeup’ look with one layer, but I could build it up for a fuller face. I wouldn’t say it’s for someone wanting really intense coverage, but you can build it from light to medium and beyond. After a long day, I noticed some creasing around my eyes, but I usually get that and think it was more my concealer. The rest of my face was pretty crease-free. I was also impressed by the Fluid Flex technology – it didn’t settle too heavily into my fine lines or pores, and I could still see my skin glowing underneath, which meant my skincare base wasn’t completely lost. You also don’t need much product for a full face, so I can see the bottle lasting me a while. I’ve only just started using it, and I’m already thinking about repurchasing. Maybe I’ve become a foundation girl after all. I have combination skin and, because finding my foundation shade is such a nightmare, I don’t actually wear foundation that regularly. I’d never tried a Fenty foundation before, although I’ve used the concealer and really liked the formula and coverage, so I was hoping the foundation would have that same coverage without feeling too heavy. I was matched to 426W, and it was NOT my colour… at all. I ended up having to mix it with a much darker concealer to make it work, which obviously changed the texture and made everything feel heavier on my face. I tried it several times in front of different windows and even in the sun, and it kept giving me the same three shade options. I also felt like my skin looked lighter in the selfies than it does in real life. It made me think the technology could work better if it asked you a few more questions alongside the selfie, because skin tone is so nuanced. I love the idea of being able to shade match from home, but after this experience, I’d still be wary of blind-buying a foundation online. The coverage itself was solid, though, and I didn’t need much product. If I’d had the right shade, I could see this being a really reliable foundation for covering blemishes and marks without feeling like I was wearing loads of makeup. Describing my skin type is pretty dependent on the season. In the colder winter months, I’m definitely on the drier side and live and die by electrolytes to lock in hydration, but for the most part, I’d say I have combination skin. I do enjoy a full face from time to time, but I’ve never been a big fan of matte foundations. I’ve rarely found one that doesn’t amplify any dryness and suck the life out of my skin, leaving me looking a bit like a soulless porcelain doll that you find in your grandma’s house. I’m a sheer-foundation girl through and through, so I was intrigued to see whether this could sway me. First impressions were very good. The texture has some weight to it (it’s not thin or watery), and you can tell pretty quickly that the coverage is going to be there. For my skin, though, I found a brush wasn’t the best way to apply it. My trusty beauty blender, on the other hand, delivered, and before I knew it, I was questioning why I hadn’t tried Fenty foundation sooner. I intentionally didn’t set it with powder or setting spray because I wanted to properly put it through its paces – and put it through its paces I did. My day started around 1pm and ended past midnight, taking me from brunch to dinner and drinks, before finishing at a boxing match in a very hot stadium. Oh, and of course, more food to finish the night. There was some smudging on my nose by the end of the night, but after three rounds of food and God knows how many drinks, all without setting, that was to be expected. I was slightly concerned about whether I’d need industrial-strength cleanser to get it off, but thankfully, a little micellar water and my usual nighttime routine did the job just fine. As for the shade matcher, I was pretty sceptical going in, but it actually delivered a very close match. I wasn’t the biggest fan of the filter that appears when using the technology, as it was pretty hard to see the suggested shade on the screen, but I can’t complain about the final result. Interestingly, when I used the alternative option that asks for your current foundation shade, it recommended something completely different. But the shade I got through the selfie matcher blended effortlessly.
