Jessica Lange surprised fans when she returned to “American Horror Story” this fall after a lengthy absence, but that didn’t stop her from calling out the anthology series’ production company, FX, over a very specific “bone of contention” from years past.

Appearing on a panel with her “AHS” co-star Sarah Paulson at New York’s PaleyFest last week, Lange lamented that she and her colleagues had to “drive ourselves home” from the New Orleans set of “American Horror Story: Coven” after a day’s shooting.

“We would drive ourselves home at like 4 or 5 in the morning, park on some street in the French Quarter, and find our way home,” she recalled, according to fan footage of the event.

As to why Lange believes FX didn’t provide a car service for the “AHS” cast, she quipped: “Because they were too fucking cheap.”

Though Paulson didn’t add any details to Lange’s anecdote, she laughed with the crowd in response.

Representatives for FX didn’t immediately respond to HuffPost’s request for comment.

Lange returned to “American Horror Story” for the horror franchise’s 13th season, which premiered last month, alongside series veterans Angela Bassett, Kathy Bates, Evan Peters and Emma Roberts.

The two-time Oscar winner last appeared on “AHS” as a series regular during its fourth season, “American Horror Story: Freak Show,” which aired from 2014 to 2015. In 2018, she briefly reprised the role of Constance Langdon ― introduced on “American Horror Story: Murder House” in 2011 ― for two episodes.

As recently as last year, Lange seemingly had little interest in returning to “AHS,” despite the fact that she’s received two Emmy Awards for her earlier work on the series.

“Oh, Christ, no. I mean, I haven’t done it for more than 10 years, 12 years,” she told a reporter at Ireland’s Dublin International Film Festival. “So no, I’m not doing it.”

Appearing on “Live with Kelly and Mark” last month, however, Lange revealed how a conversation with series co-creator Ryan Murphy changed her mind.

“First, he talked to me about playing [Season 1’s] Constance, which I think was his favorite character that I did,” she explained. “But I said I’ll come back if I can do all four characters ... It was fun to play them, and, coming back, it was great to do them again.”

Despite Lange’s long absence from “AHS,” she’s maintained a professional relationship with Murphy, having starred in his series “Feud: Bette and Joan” in 2017 and “The Politician” in 2019.
