“We went our separate ways, and it took me a few weeks to realize how much I missed her.” "Well, he did break up with his girlfriend, and to his great shock and disappointment, all of those women did just see him as a friend. We fell out a couple of years later, but at that point he’d not had sex with anyone since that girlfriend. Don’t know if he regretted it, but the pastures were clearly not greener." "I think a lot of people who have regrets are comparing life with the partner that they are leaving with life with another partner. They think they will be happier with that person because they like them more, will be liked more, etc. But when making this decision, you should be comparing your happiness with this person with your happiness if you ended up alone. "I'm not saying you have to end up alone; it's just that you need to evaluate that person's existence in your life as a partner versus not having that person as a partner, not comparing your current partner to a potential other partner. Because potential is always going to be more attractive." Note: Responses have been edited for length/clarity.
