Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) condemned Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s plans to livestream the firing squad execution Nidal Malik Hasan, the perpetrator of the 2009 Fort Hood mass shooting.

During a “Real Time with Bill Maher” appearance on Friday, Tillis said that the proposed livestream needs to be called off.

“No, we’ve gotta stop that, this is bullshit, there’s no way we should be doing that,” Tillis said.

“So shoot him, but in private, you’re saying,” Maher said.

“Yeah,” Tillis said. “I mean, look, he murdered a number of people, and you can argue back and forth about the death penalty, but this is not who we are.”

Tillis added that he’s surprised that Hegseth hasn’t asked to be personally added to the firing squad carrying out the execution.

“I mean this is performative at the worst level, and it has to be reversed,” he added.

Bill Maher on Nidal Hasan: You say yes for the execution, you just don't like that it's public. Thom Tillis: No, we've got to stop that. This is bullshit. This is performative at the worst level,Sara Eisen: It's also what our enemies do. pic.twitter.com/Tq5WjglqX5

Fellow panelist, CNBC anchor Sara Eisen, agreed with Tillis and added that public executions are “what our enemies do.”

“I saw a quote from you, senator, talking about how, you see this in Iran, you see this in Afghanistan,” she said.

Eisen continued by saying that she went to graduate school with James Foley, an American journalist who was abducted and beheaded by ISIS while covering the Syrian civil war in 2014, with the terrorist group releasing a video of the killing.

Tillis has said over the last several days, including during his appearance with Maher, that he regrets his vote to confirm Hegseth and he should be removed from office.

“I’m telling you, I fucked up and he needs to go,” Tillis said Friday.
