Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.) uttered a truly odd statement about racism while speaking at the Lincoln-Reagan Dinner in Ohio on Thursday.

“Now, look, the truth is ... we’ve still got work to do, but most Americans don’t think that much about color anymore. They think about character. They understand that souls have no color. You know what the American people think? You know what they understand viscerally? They understand that to a bear, we all taste like chicken,” Kennedy said.

Kennedy is no stranger to unusual public remarks, including his somewhat hyperbolic commentary about radioactive shrimp recalls.

“And if you eat too much of that foreign, foreign shrimp and oysters, you’ll grow an extra ear, won’t you?” Kennedy asked Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins in July.

Kennedy also made a spectacle of the shrimp issue last year, presenting a cardboard poster from the 1979 sci-fi horror movie “Alien” on the Senate floor.

“This is a photograph of the alien from the movie ‘Alien,’” Kennedy said next to the image during his speech. “This is what you could end up looking like if you eat some of the raw frozen shrimp... because the shrimp was radioactive. I kid you not... it will kill you.”
