Prince Harry is opening up about slipping into a two-week depression after his earth-shattering royal step-back six years ago. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced their intention to step back as working royals in January of 2020 and subsequently made the move to North America with their baby boy, Archie. In a new MasterClass lesson about grief released on Thursday, Harry shared that he suffered an “adrenaline crash” once he arrived in Canada. ”Away from the stressful environment where presumably my body was just pumped full of adrenaline, within two or three days, I experienced this adrenaline crash ― something that I’d never experienced before,” the prince shared in the online lesson, called “Redefining Grief: Building Resilience Through Loss.” “It was as if I needed stress in order to get the adrenaline to make my brain function because I became useless around the house,” he shared. “I actually slipped into depression for about two weeks and I felt like I couldn’t function without adrenaline.” In the MasterClass lesson, Harry, joined by neuroscientist and professor Dr. Mary-Frances O’Connor, opens up about some of the ways that grief and the loss of his mother, Princess Diana, have played a central role in his life. He shared his long-held belief that his late mother was still alive and would return to him, a confession he first revealed in his memoir, “Spare.” “I believed that she had created this exit to get away from all the things that were destroying her life and that she was gonna reenter the fray in some disguise and then whisk me and my brother away,” he said during the taping. He said he also had a hard time feeling happy “because I felt disloyal and guilty for the possibility of being happy and joyful without her.” “I felt like I had to be sad and I had to be emotionally numb in order to prove to her that I missed her,” Harry added. Princess Diana was killed in a high-speed car crash Aug. 31, 1997, at the age of 36. Prince William was 15 at the time, while Prince Harry was 12. As the 30th anniversary of Diana’s death approaches, sources close to the duke have shared that he is possibly working on a documentary about his mother. A source close to the royal also told HuffPost that Harry “has discussed a number of possible projects” to mark the anniversary, and “is still considering the most meaningful ways to honour her legacy.” By entering your email and clicking Sign Up, you're agreeing to let us send you customized marketing messages about us and our advertising partners.
