Vice President JD Vance made a head-scratching prediction about what could happen if Democrats retake Congress in November, leading to many critics on social media pointing out an obvious flaw in his fearmongering.

“If the Democrats win, here’s what’s going to happen. Congressional investigations as far as the eye can see, not good policy-making for the American people,” Vance said in an interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity, a portion of which aired on Friday. “You’re gonna have American energy prices skyrocket because they will go to war against American coal, oil and natural gas.”

Commenters jumped on Vance’s comments, noting that energy prices are already significantly inflated, largely due to President Donald Trump’s decision to launch the war against Iran alongside Israel.

As of Saturday, Brent crude, the benchmark price for oil, sat at just above $102 a barrel, up roughly 58% for the year, according to Trading Economics.

A gallon of regular gas also remains high, sitting as of Saturday at $4.38 per gallon, up from $3.15 per gallon one year ago, according to AAA.

Diesel fuel, which drives up the cost of everyday goods, sits even higher at an average of $6.35 per gallon, according to AAA.
