One of my favorite horror films of all time and definitely one of the best from this decade! I avoided this film for two years before finally watching it. While it is, of course, a film with jump scares and other chilling elements, it also focuses on long-term trauma. What it is about: The sequel to Smile, it follows a troubled pop star who is infected by the same supernatural presence. Sequels can be hit or miss, and this one definitely hit! Some argue this is better than the first, but it is so hard to pick between the two! I will say this film is a bit more entertaining, as the focus is on a very famous pop star. While a horror film, it was so cool to get a glimpse inside the life of a star! What it is about: A family reunion turns into a terrifying battle of survival as masked individuals break in and attempt to kill the family members. Whenever people ask me what my favorite horror film is, I always have to mention this one. While I cannot name one film as my favorite, this one is definitely up there! A great horror film that features noteworthy survival tips! So, take notes! What it is about: Kate and John adopt a 9-year-old girl who initially seems very polite and mature. However, as strange events unfold, Kate becomes convinced that her new daughter poses a serious danger to those around her. If you want a shocking twist, watch this movie immediately! I remember my sister saw this movie when it first came out and later told me the twist. Years later, I finally watched the whole movie. I wish I could have watched it without knowing everything that happened. So, if you want to watch it, avoid all spoilers! What it is about: A remake of the 1977 classic, this film focuses on a family stuck in the New Mexico desert while being targeted by cannibals. While I do enjoy the original, I prefer this remake. This version emphasizes the importance of family in a way the original could not. The flow, acting, and quality are better. In the remake, it is almost as if you can really feel the pain the family is going through. The pacing makes you believe you are truly watching a family experience a nightmare, rather than simply watching actors on a set. What it is about: A high school student struggling with being bullied and having a deeply religious mother discovers she has telekinetic powers that can be used to enact revenge. You simply cannot watch horror films on Halloween without watching Carrie! One of the best and most iconic horror films of all time! The topics of bullying, religion, and supernatural abilities can be a lot for one film, but Carrie connected them in such an impressive way, telling a truly unique story! What it is about: Teenage babysitter Laurie Strode is terrorized by recently escaped patient Michael Myers on Halloween night. How can we celebrate Halloween without watching Halloween? Michael Myers is one of the most iconic villains in the horror genre. Like, what will it take for someone to kill him finally? There are 13 films in this franchise. Sometimes I watch a few of the others, but I always watch this one! What it is about: A remake of the 1978 film, this film follows a group of strangers who seek shelter in a shopping mall while their town becomes infested with zombies. This film has it all: comedy, action, and horror! I first saw it when I was probably eight years old. I know, I had no business watching this film at that age. When I rewatched it as an adult, it was even better than I remembered! I have never seen the original, but this remake is widely beloved! What it is about: A young woman tries to survive Halloween night while being stalked by a creepy clown known as Art the Clown. Disclaimer: This movie can be quite gory and gross at times. I have never had a fear of clowns, but if you do, maybe avoid this one. When I first watched this film, I was glad to see the slasher subgenre was still alive! Terrifier proved that a low budget can still produce great films! What it is about: This sequel essentially lays the foundation for what the plot of the Terrifier franchise is. Art the Clown is at it again, but there might be someone destined to destroy him. Disclaimer: Even more glory and gross than the first one! I love the first film in this franchise! However, the sequel introduces a new character who is crucial to the rest of the franchise. The plot really starts to come together in this film. What it is about: Another Terrifier movie! Art the Clown has moved on from terrorizing on Halloween night to terrorizing on Christmas! Disclaimer: Maybe the most gory and gross of the franchise! In my opinion, this one is the best of the franchise! While many people like the franchise for its gory, gross nature, to me, this film focused on the concept of good vs. evil. Art the Clown has developed so much since the first installment. He represents something much more sinister in this film. This installment centers on family, destiny, and perseverance. What it is about: A masked killer targets high school students in this iconic slasher franchise. Nowadays, it feels like most horror films focus on a supernatural presence. Sometimes, you just want to watch a horror film about a masked person going around killing people. Scream is another franchise that has produced several films. While I enjoy most of them, I would say this one is the best and most cohesive. What it is about: One summer night, four friends commit a terrible crime and believe they have gotten away with it. One year later, the group is alerted by an anonymous individual that they know exactly what they did that summer. Jennifer Love Hewitt, Freddie Prinze Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Ryan Phillippe? A '90s dream! For whatever reason, no matter how many times I watch this film, I always forget who exactly was terrorizing them and why. Oh well, at least whenever I rewatch it, I get a partial clean slate! What it is about: While in the Appalachian Mountains, six women go spelunking but soon find themselves trapped with something malevolent. This is a great "I wouldn't go there in the first place" film! Have you ever watched a film where the characters are engaging in something way too risky and dangerous for you? One where you just cannot relate and do not understand why they would put themselves in such danger? That is how I felt with this film. To be fair, only one person can really be to blame for the initial problems. However, what they later encounter is something no one could have expected. What it is about: 10 strangers seek shelter in a motel during a storm. However, they soon discover they are being murdered one by one. While this is more of a thriller, Identity certainly has several elements that are commonly found in a horror film. This is a perfect film for those who love a good twist. I first watched this when I was probably six. Yes, like before, I was definitely too young to watch this. Rewatching it as an adult made me realize that younger me had absolutely no idea what was really happening in the film! What it is about: The third installment of the Final Destination franchise focuses on a high school student who has a premonition of a roller coaster crash right before the ride is about to start, causing her and several others to exit the ride. The crash occurs soon after, killing everyone on board. However, Death still comes after those who got off. In my opinion, this is the most entertaining Final Destination film. The premonition scene was so intense! The chemistry between Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Ryan Merriman made them a great duo. You could not help but root for them until the very end! What it is about: A group of friends heads to a cabin in the woods for a weekend, but their first night becomes a fight for survival as monsters attack them. Unbeknownst to the group, the whole ordeal is being controlled by an engineer in an underground facility. I believe this is one of the most creative films out there! A little warning: The Cabin in the Woods is really a comedy-horror. The point of the film is that it pokes fun at horror tropes. Nonetheless, it is definitely still a horror film with gore and chills. What it is about: On the night of her wedding, a bride is hunted by her in-laws in a deadly game of hide-and-seek. This film is more of a comedy-horror, so if you like humor sprinkled over terror, give this a watch! Even while hunting for the bride, the family members made time to make us laugh! However, the film gets pretty dark and scary near the end. I saw this in theaters roughly five times, so I would definitely say it is among my favorite horror films! What it is about: Individuals download an app that provides a countdown to their deaths. While many countdowns are decades into the future, some have much shorter time left to live. However, attempting to avoid the scheduled death will have consequences, If you like the Final Destination franchise, you will probably enjoy this film! Now, this is not the best or most creative horror film. Countdown is quite predictable, but that does not mean it cannot still be a fun watch! We all have films we love but know are not necessarily Oscar-worthy. This is a nice, easy, and fun watch for when you want to turn on a spooky film! What it is about: A family on vacation is terrorized by their evil doppelgängers. I have been a Jordan Peele fan since his Key & Peele days. When he wrote and directed the 2017 film Get Out, I was so excited to see it. I loved the film and was excited to see what else was up his sleeve. Two years later, he released Us. I remember seeing this on opening day and being blown away. The idea of being tormented by your doppelgänger who wants to take over your life is just so scary! While a little confusing at first, the cast, eerie scenes, and score really make the film fascinating! Want to get your very own quizzes and posts featured on BuzzFeed’s homepage and app?
