Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) goofed big time on Fox News while attacking former special counsel Jack Smith ― just as fellow Missouri Sen. Eric Schmitt (R) did hours earlier during a Tuesday hearing.

In attempting to assert that Smith went over the line in his investigation of Trump, Hawley said Smith went through Melania Trump’s “personal drawers.”

But Smith was appointed special counsel months after the Aug. 8, 2022, FBI search of Mar-a-Lago in connection with the classified documents scandal.

“He was trying to get his hands on everything related to Donald Trump,” Hawley told host Sean Hannity. “He read all of Trump’s phones. He read all of Trump’s documents. Let’s not forget, he went through Melania Trump’s personal drawers, clothing, items very personal to her. I mean, this is ridiculous, just ridiculous. This guy was totally out of control. And I hope he’s held accountable for it.”

Trump complained that the FBI’s “animals” messed up his wife’s folded “panties,” explaining that they went through her drawer and drawer, meaning dresser drawer and underwear.

In the Senate hearing earlier, Hawley’s upper-chamber counterpart Schmitt attempted to discredit Smith by accusing him of perjury but blundered. The lawmaker asserted that Smith was in Atlanta at a moment he denied being there. But it became clear that Smith had attended a college basketball game in another city on the night in question. Schmitt had apparently confused an NBA game involving the Atlanta Hawks with a college women’s game in Maryland where the visiting team was the Iowa Hawkeyes.
