Longtime Democratic strategist James Carville shared a rather convincing theory on the latest episode of his “Politics War Room” podcast about President Donald Trump — and his fixation with constructing, renovating or demolishing iconic landmarks in Washington, D.C.

“Trump has a particular hatred for Washington, D.C.,” said Carville. “Why do you think he is trying to defile everything he can, from the Lincoln Memorial to Arlington National Cemetery to the Reflecting Pool to the White House to every gauche thing he can think of?”

The 81-year-old strategist went on to recall once speaking with former Sen. Russell Long (D-La.), who purportedly said D.C. feels like a “major world capital” governed by “small-R Republicans” because they didn’t dare overcompensate with the architecture.

“We’re not an empire,” he recalled Long stating. “We don’t do that.”

Carville continued, “I think Trump hates all of that. I think he hates what Washington is, what Washington stands for. He doesn’t like the architecture, he doesn’t like the inherent modesty that comes with being part of a Constitution that was written and went into effect in 1789.”

Trump has certainly been fixated on building his new White House ballroom and triumphal arch, as well as renovating the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool and potentially demolishing the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, despite his disastrous approval ratings.

Carville seems confident in his theory as to why.

“I think he hates everything about Washington, and I think that people around the country should go to Washington if you can afford it,” the strategist argued during the podcast. “And when you go, you’re going to find out it’s one fucking impressive place.”

Carville added that he lived there “for a long time” and has always been proud of it, urging people flying into Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport to get a window seat and catch the city’s “money view,” calling it “one of the best airline views” that one could have.

Trump has barreled ahead with his exorbitant White House ballroom project despite an ongoing lawsuit from preservationists and wants to break ground on his arch despite a lawsuit from Vietnam veterans who argue it would block views of the Arlington cemetery.

Al Hunt, Carville’s co-host, pleaded with Trump to keep his hands off the nation’s capital.

“Trump, just stick with your, whatever it’s called, the Trump Airport in Palm Beach, and they can go and they can look at Mar-a-Lago,” he said during the podcast released Wednesday about MAGA voters flying to the Florida hotspot. “But stay away from the beautiful capital.”
