These bins, racks, and simple upgrades can make a huge difference.

Jennifer Granger Tipton, a member of the National Association of Productivity & Organizing Professionals (NAPO) Board of Directors and the owner of Breathable Spaces in Ohio, said that the first step to cabinet organizing is to always remove everything from the cabinet because it’s much easier to evaluate what you have when you can see it all at once.

“As you sort, ask yourself what you actually use, how often you use it, and whether it belongs in that space,” Tipton said.

Shara Kay, a Beverly Hills-based certified professional organizer and also a member of NAPO, added that your most-used items should be the easiest to reach and that items should ideally live close to where you use them.

As you shop the following collection of storage solution items that Kay and Tipton recommend, they both caution against falling into the trap of buying organizing products first and that the best organizing systems start with decluttering.

“Organizing products should support the items you decide to keep, not determine how much you keep. Waiting until the end ensures you purchase the right size and quantity of organizers instead of spending money on products you may not need,” Tipton said.

To get your cupboards and cabinets out of the depths of despair and into a space where you can actually find things, take a look at the various bins, racks and other clever items that will actually help.

Tipton said that if she had to recommend one item for organizing, it would be a clear-handled bin, specifically these from The Container Store, which are stackable and come in an endless selection of depths and widths.

"For [people] who want a more elevated look, I also love the Neat Method acacia drawer organizers," Tipton said of these good-looking boxes that feature non-slip rubber feet and can be arranged in whatever configuration best suits your needs because they come in seven different sizes.

"Although they’re designed for drawers, they work beautifully inside cabinets to create designated spaces for smaller items while adding warmth and a polished appearance," she said.

Kay also mentioned lazy Susans as a game-changing organizational addition, and linked this acrylic turntable as an example, which comes in smaller diameters and a two-tiered design. 

"Turntables are especially useful in upper corner cabinets. They work well for oils, vinegars, sauces, medicines, supplements, or toiletries. The key is choosing a size that fits the depth of your cabinet," she said. 

Tipton told us that many cabinets have unused vertical space above shorter items.

"Shelf risers and expandable shelves make use of that wasted space by creating an additional level for dishes, mugs, canned goods, or toiletries," she said.

Tipton called adjustable dividers excellent for storing cutting boards, baking sheets, cooling racks, serving trays, and even folded linens vertically instead of stacking them.

We found these shelf dividers that are made from wood and available in packs of four, six or 10. They’re designed to install easily.

Seeking inspiration for Tipton's suggestion of a file organizer for cabinets, we found this dedicated rack for pots, pans, plates or lids. It's made from metal and expands up to nearly 23 inches in length.

When it comes to keeping your linen cabinets organized, Kay said that she prefers towels and sheets folded and stacked neatly on a shelf without containers. But for more memento and keepsake items that may need an extra layer of protection, she suggests these linen-covered boxes from The Container Store.
