It turns out that Christmas movies have a pretty bad track record with this.

I'm a Senior Editor here at BuzzFeed, which means I've spent wayyyyy too much time on the internet.

"The core theme of the movie (which it makes very clear) is to have faith in the goodness of people, and to trust those you otherwise might not. Good, simple moral. But what they actually show is Raya being punished over and over for putting faith in people, even getting Sisu (the Last Dragon) killed because she didn’t trust the antagonist Namaari — you know, who currently had a crossbow pointed at her friend’s heart. In the end, everyone basically dies except Naamari, who only saves the day because she has a last-minute crisis of conscience. So the takeaway is to blindly trust people who’ve repeatedly screwed you over, because not doing so might ruin your life. And if you (very understandably) view certain people with suspicion, whatever harm they might do to you is actually your fault."

"It’s even worse, because the ending has Namaari decide to save the world because *WHAT THE F*** ELSE WOULD SHE DO??* The world is ending around her and she has no way out, why would she do literally ANYTHING but what she did??? It’s not that trusting her worked out; it’s that they trusted her to make the right decision when she was backed into a corner, and there was literally no other option for her but to do that or die."

"Mulan going from a story about how everyone has potential for greatness if they put in the effort and work hard to achieve it, to a story about how some people are just born special and will never have to work a day in their lives because they won the life lottery, gives me depression."

"Disney has had some *weird* morals to their movies lately, overall, honestly.

Ohana sure means splitting the family, and abandoning your home!"

"Also, the whole conflict is dumb considering Hawaii has top-tier colleges for marine biology that are free for natives."

"But no, she had to go to 'Real America,' because there’s nothing a native Hawaiian hates more than Hawaii."

"Imagine being the yuppie couple next door in Christmas Vacation. The movie makes them out to be assholes when all we ever see them do is chill out in their own home, bothering no one, until Clark and Eddie f*** everything up. I think the movie was punishing them for not celebrating Christmas to the insane degree that Clark does. And like, okay? Clark is pretty much batshit.

Christmas movies can be oddly hateful lmao."

"You want peace and quiet during the holiday season? Well, you clearly deserve to get bullied by your neighbors until you're ready to celebrate with them."

"Moral: Workers asking for better conditions are bad! Be happy with your position in life, don't try to move up!"

"Trust the racial biases your family tries to imbue onto you, because your friend who looks different to you is absolutely plotting to kill you."

"If you're depressed, don't take your meds, just be happy. It's fine to ignore reasonable warnings against disaster.Happiness only comes from massive parties and social interaction."

"I always think about Madagascar 3, which ends with the animals all joining a circus because it's more fun than the zoo."

"When your peers don’t like you for who you are, radically change yourself to gain their approval. And make sure you do it to a catchy song."

"Ralph Breaks the Internet has a good message about following your dreams and letting your friends go…

Had the franchise not been based on video game characters who have very good reasons to stay in their roles, like their whole existence and their friends’ existence."

"It’s okay to be different as long as said difference is of clear practical benefit."

"The incredibly privileged screeching HOA princeling of a street where mandatory Christmas decorations cost several thousand dollars each year is correct, actually, and you should give this insufferable little tyrant everything he wants, including a human woman, instead of feeding him into a wood chipper feet first."

"Can we throw most Hallmark movies in there, too, like a good 80-plus percent have the moral of, 'It's okay to cheat on/break up with your boyfriend/fiancé/husband because they didn't drop EVERYTHING (usually including a deal/job that will set both up for years if not life), including plans you were fully aware of before going to visit a hard-to-reach town/village, and show up the next day (even when many of them do).'"

"Poe's side of the plot in The Last Jedi is great: Follow orders blindly, your superiors know better."

"'We have a plan, but we can't discuss it openly. Lest the First Order somehow finds out what we're doing and prevents it from happening.'

There, just saved a whole bunch of time within two sentences. Communication is important, people!"

"Maybe not *fully* intended, but almost every Toy Story movie has something along the lines of, 'These toys are sentient and alive, when you grow up and move on to other things, you are breaking their hearts and causing them lasting trauma (though if you name your child after one of your childhood toys that will help the toy to heal); when they break and you throw them out, you are killing them; when you do weird creative experimentation with them, you are torturing them; if you try to preserve them forever and not play with them, that’s basically purgatory.'

I don’t think that’s what the movies *want* kids to take away from them, but I feel like I did partially internalize that as a kid, and it made it a lot harder to throw anything away growing up."

"Love the movie, but the moral is that trauma damages you irreparably and nothing you do (including facing said trauma) can stop you from hurting others because of it."

"'No matter how hard you try to change, an evil person cannot evolve past that.'

Bonus point if relapsing into your old ways happens just to connect with your son and impress him.

"Consumerism is good. The one paying for the bill should just open his wallet without boundaries and not have a say on anything. Anything else will just end in trouble and disappointment."

"Got divorced and lost custody of your kids for being a terrible father and husband? Just engage in a large, elaborate fraud while encouraging your kids to lie to their mom and then try to sabotage your ex-wife's new relationship because you don't like the new guy!"

"Segregation is good; listen to the few people who say what you stand for is bad and conform to their world views no matter how bad they might be; poaching is bad so we should take all the endangered animals and shove 'em in a cave, at least they aren't being killed by humans anymore; it's okay to abandon your loving family for your first crush even if she is abusive to you; give up on your dreams, they are unobtainable; just because the rest of humanity is shitty you don't deserve the things you love and will never be good enough because of it."
