Meta raised its 2026 capex guidance to a range of $130 billion to $145 billion, nearly doubling its 2025 full-year spend as it builds AI infrastructure at scale.

Q2 free cash flow fell 91% and operating margin compressed to 31% from 43%, revealing real financial strain from Meta's AI infrastructure buildout.

Zuckerberg is fielding compute resale offers at a meaningful premium, positioning Meta as a mega cloud rival to AWS, Azure, and Google.

The headline number for long-term Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META) shareholders is a spending line. And it just got bigger.

$130 billion to $145 billion. That is Meta's full-year 2026 capital expenditure guidance, including principal payments on finance leases, as narrowed from a prior $125 to $145 billion range in the company's Q2 2026 report on July 29, 2026. This is forward guidance, not a reported figure. It is also the clearest quantification yet of how far Meta is willing to stretch its balance sheet to become an AI infrastructure operator at scale, at the same moment frontier labs like Anthropic are reportedly pushing toward 10 gigawatts of compute by 2027.

The build is already visible in the quarterly numbers. Q2 capital expenditures, including principal payments on finance leases, were $31.1 billion, driven by servers, data centers, and network infrastructure. That single quarter of spend approaches half of Meta's full-year 2025 capex of $72.215 billion. Management said current plans are geared toward maximizing 2026 and 2027 capacity, with data-center and network foundations flexible enough to keep growing compute in 2028 and beyond.

To fund it, Meta ended Q2 with $90.3 billion in cash and marketable securities and $83.7 billion in debt, and it announced a strategic venture with BlackRock to develop a one gigawatt data center in El Paso, Texas. CFO Susan Li said Meta is "demand constrained" today, with numerous return-positive uses for additional compute if the company had it.

Shares have carried the story. Meta trades at $680.85 as of September 18, 2026, up 25.23% over one month and 5.66% over one week. Year to date the stock is up 3.32%, and over ten years it is up 433.81%. The one-year reading is still negative at -11.95%, a reminder of the drawdown investors absorbed as capex guidance climbed.

The bull case is that Meta is turning capex into a new revenue engine while the core advertising business is still accelerating. Q2 revenue reached $60.801 billion, up 27.96% year over year, beating the $60.286 billion consensus. Advertising revenue was $59.4 billion, up 27%, with ad impressions up 14% and average price per ad up 12%. Family daily active people hit 3.60 billion, up 3%.

Layered on top is a genuine enterprise business. More than 1 million businesses now use Meta Business Agents each week. Advantage Plus end-to-end advertising solutions crossed $75 billion in annual revenue run rate. Rebuilt Meta AI drove a 60% increase in the number of people interacting with the assistant each day. And CEO Mark Zuckerberg told investors Meta is receiving "quite a number of offers at a meaningful premium over what we paid for the compute", framing direct compute sales as one leg of a portfolio that also includes APIs, business agents, productivity tools, and subscriptions.

The valuation still leaves room. Meta trades at a P/E of 25 with a 30.24% return on equity and 82.0% gross margin. Prediction markets assign a 0.845 probability that Meta will hold a higher valuation than OpenAI at year-end settlement, and the sell side carries 55 Buy ratings against 7 Holds. Investors buying the story are effectively underwriting Meta's shift into a mega cloud operator with its own 3.6 billion-user distribution engine attached.

Long-term holders should read the $130 to $145 billion guide as the price of admission to a business Meta did not previously have: selling intelligence and compute to enterprises and developers on top of the world's largest social graph. The costs are real. Q2 free cash flow was $784 million, down 91.31% year over year, and operating margin compressed to 31% from 43%. But Zuckerberg said the results "are already showing" in the ad business, and the near-term catalyst is on the calendar: Meta plans to detail its next generation of AI glasses at its Connect conference on September 23, 2026. If enterprise monetization keeps pace with the capex line, the mega cloud operator label sticks.
