“And if you still don’t think it’s that deep, I invite you to do your best to empathize with every female athlete who has had to compete while simultaneously being objectified on the court, disrespected on the field, and oversexualized in the media,” she added. “I don’t typically speak out on controversial topics, but to me, this isn’t controversial. This is about demanding respect for female athletes and protecting the future of women in sports. We have worked far too hard to be taken seriously to keep reinforcing the idea that our bodies are more valuable than our abilities.”

However, Sydney’s response was only met with more backlash, with several people suggesting that she completely missed the point. “The fact you think the ESPN Body Issue is comparable to this campaign shows how badly you have missed the point,” one person said. “Female athletes choosing to pose nude in a publication specifically celebrating the strength, power and capability of elite athletic bodies is not the same as using a conventionally attractive actress, sexualised alongside sporting equipment, to sell a gambling product. Those women were the athletes. Their bodies were being celebrated for what they could do. Sport wasn’t being used as a prop to sexualise them.”

Samantha then added that while she’ll always encourage her daughters to be strong, loud, beautiful, and sexy if they want to, she also hopes they learn that “attention and value are NOT the same thing.”

“THAT is the part I’m worried about raising a daughter today. Raising them in a culture that hands girls a phone at 12 and spends the next decade teaching them exactly which version of themselves gets the most clicks. Then calls it empowerment because they chose to post it,” she wrote.
