President Donald Trump’s premature victory lap against the NFL got blindsided by reality on Tuesday.

In Nielsen numbers reported by CNN, the NFL opener on Wednesday between the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks attracted more than 25 million viewers. Its competition, Trump’s keynote speech at the Republican Party’s midterm convention, pulled in about 3 million.

The landslide appeared to make a fool of the president, who crowed over his viewership triumph before any game ratings were available.

“The Republican Midterm Convention last night, in Dallas, was a major, sold out hit, far bigger, better, and more important than anyone thought possible,” he wrote on Truth Social last Thursday. “It was really something, streaming all over the place, and really big numbers, despite going up against the NFL. The overall numbers beat the NFL.”

A previous Nielsen report revealed that Trump’s promise of a $5,000 “dividend” if Republicans win the midterms and a bizarre masturbation joke about James Talarico netted him 2.5 million viewers on Fox News, in addition to 400,000 on Newsmax and 125,000 on NewsNation.

The 2.5 million number released last week already indicated trouble for the president.

That number was less than the usual viewership for Greg Gutfeld’s Fox News show and Sean Hannity’s in that 9-11 p.m. time frame on Wednesday.

Trump can’t say he wasn’t warned.

New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman said days earlier that the president’s team did not account for the football conflict.
