Today, kids, Ms. Rachel is going to teach everyone about all the different meanings for the word “chicken.” Yay!

On Monday, the popular children’s entertainer and fierce Palestine advocate called out singer Ed Sheeran for his apolitical stance amid the drama surrounding musician Macklemore — and she did it in the gentlest way possible.

The “Thrift Shop” rapper was booted as the opener from the remainder of Sheeran’s U.S. Loop Tour after making “Free Palestine” speeches at the “Shape of You” singer’s shows earlier this month. Macklemore explained in a lengthy statement published Monday that his firing was a result of pushback from New England Patriots and Gillette Stadium owner Robert Kraft, who rallied other stadium owners to refuse Macklemore performances at their venues.

Although Macklemore did not blame Sheeran for his removal, he did express disappointment in the “Perfect” singer’s refusal to see “past his public facing, ‘I don’t take sides’” stance.

And it seems Ms. Rachel agreed with that particular sentiment.

“Ed Sheeran had an opportunity [to] show that we won’t be bullied into punishing people for supporting Palestine,” she wrote in a statement published to her Instagram account Monday. “Instead, he caved to people who refuse to accept what the world knows. A genocide is happening in Gaza. We all need to speak out against it.”

Ms. Rachel expanded on her thoughts in her caption.

“If more than 20,000 white children were killed in another part of the world, everyone would be shouting about it at their concerts,” she wrote. “Treating some children’s lives as less worthy of outrage is racist. Silence during a genocide is not neutral.”

Considering that a February survey by Gallup showed that more Americans sympathize with Palestinians in the Middle East (41%) than with Israelis (36%), one may wonder why such a fuss was made over Macklemore advocating for an increasingly popular opinion — which he has also been vocal about for years.

Enter: musician Pink.

After Macklemore made a “Free Palestine” speech at a Sheeran show at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Sept. 4, the “So What” singer shared a post by the group StopAntisemitism that called Macklemore’s speech “anti-Israel propaganda,” claimed he had “accused Israel of a false ‘genocide,’” and demanded Jewish audience members get refunds. It should be noted that StopAntisemitism has been accused of harassing and doxing those who speak out against Israel.

After receiving pushback from fans, Pink took to Instagram in an attempt to clarify why she shared StopAntisemitism’s post by admitting that although it “said things in words I didn’t write, and I wouldn’t have chosen all of them” she believes that “Palestinians deserve a future that honors their humanity and their aspirations” and “Hamas is a terrorist organization.”

“Protecting innocent life comes first, everywhere, and nobody should ever celebrate the death of a child. Anybody’s child,” Pink wrote. “I’ve spent a decade as a UNICEF ambassador for kids who didn’t choose the country or the war they were born into, and I have grieved every one of them, on both sides of that fence.”
