Mariska Hargitay wasn’t afraid to step on Nicole Kidman’s toes while she opened the 78th Emmy Awards.

The “Law and Order: SVU” star, who is the first woman to host the awards in 15 years, kicked off the show on Monday with a song and dance before (playfully) trying to riff on Nicole Kidman’s iconic AMC ad.

“So when I was deciding to host the Emmys, I consistently got two pieces of advice. No. 1: Don’t do it,” Hargitay said. “And, No. 2, whatever you do ― don’t go for sincerity. I clearly ignored the first, so please join me as I ignore the second.”

“I am truly, deeply moved and so incredibly grateful to be in a room full of people who have dedicated their lives to telling stories,” Hargitay said, as she got teary and launched into an emotional monologue.

Just as things started to get a little sappy, the music from Kidman’s AMC ad began to play behind Hargitay, who started riffing on the movie star’s viral commercial.

“We come to TV for magic. To laugh, to cry, to care,” Hargitay recited as the audience began to cheer on the joke. “Because we need that ― all of us. That indescribable feeling that we get when the lights begin to dim. Dazzling images on the silver screen. Sound that I can feel.”

“No, Mariska! Come on. That’s mine. That’s my bit. You can’t do that,” Kidman said as the music cut and the audience began to laugh.

“What? No ― Nicole, I’m not,” Hargitay said before going back to her monologue. “Somehow, heartbreak feels good in a place like this.”

“No, no, no ― c’mon. That’s my line! That is actually my line,” Kidman said with a smile on her face.

“Zip it, movie lady! It’s TV’s turn tonight,” Hargitay said with a huge grin as the audience roared, and the host blew Kidman a kiss.
