Lawrence O’Donnell on Monday slammed President Donald Trump for brushing off researchers’ dire warnings surrounding artificial intelligence.

“Every president since August 29th, 1949, has worried about a possible nuclear exchange with the Soviet Union, or later a nuclear exchange with China or North Korea,” said the MS NOW host.

“Every president has felt the weight of the office on Inauguration Day when handed the nuclear codes. Then came Donald Trump, the worst possible person on earth to be in the White House, in the week when the whole world realized AI could do what nuclear weapons have not yet done.”

In the wake of whistleblowers sounding the alarm on the pace of AI’s development, including one who claimed that those building it believe it could “kill us all” by 2030, reports spilled out that industry giants have been holding discussions about crafting regulatory framework for the industry.

Trump, in a post to his Truth Social platform on Monday, signaled no interest in regulatory efforts and responded to the warnings in typical fashion.

“AI taking over the World, destroying Humanity, and all other things bad, is a HOAX,” wrote Trump, who added that AI and data centers would “not be stopped” under his watch.

O’Donnell slammed Trump’s “nothing to worry about”-type response, noting that the president used his “favorite word for the truth” — “hoax” — in the post.

Throughout his monologue, O’Donnell played clips of Sen. Jon Ossoff (D-Ga.) bringing up “what has suddenly become the most important news story of our time” in a campaign speech on Sunday.

Ossoff — during a stop in Athens, Georgia — pointed out that the president used the first day of his second term to rescind Joe Biden’s 2023 AI executive order intended to protect against the engineering of bioweapons.

The senator argued that Trump is “compromised” as a result of his family business empire’s ties to the AI industry.

“See, a capable president would move swiftly to secure and reassure the American people, rush inspectors into Frontier [AI] labs, fortify the nation against bioterrorism, demand legislation from Congress, and lead the world toward an AI treaty,” he said.

O’Donnell highlighted that Ossoff vowed that if Democrats were to control the Senate, AI CEOs will “all be under oath” in the chamber.

“And there is nothing Donald Trump could do to stop that,” the host said.
