GE Vernova (GEV) shares tanked on Monday after GLJ Research analyst Gordon Johnson initiated coverage of the energy equipment giant with a "Sell" rating. In his research note, Johnson announced an alarmingly bearish $470 price target, indicating GEV could be cut in half from its previous close over the next 12 months.

GLJ's report arrives as GE Vernova stock is already in a downtrend, currently trading about 25% below its year-to-date high.

Gordon Johnson opted for a bearish stance on GEV stock mostly because of overhyped demand expectations.

The company's share price has soared this year on projections that the AI-driven data center boom will generate unprecedented, sustained demand for gas turbines and grid infrastructure equipment.

However, GLJ Research cautions that market expectations have far outpaced near-term economic reality.

According to its analyst, power project deployment timelines, supply chain bottlenecks, and utility interconnect delays will restrict how quickly this backlog translates into actual recognized revenue, leaving GE Vernova vulnerable to sharp re-ratings if execution falls even slightly short.

In his report, Johnson also cited GE Vernova shares' stretched valuation relative to the company's underlying margin profile.

Trading at a forward price-to-earnings (P/E) multiple of about 62x, GEV has little margin for error, particularly within its Wind segment.

The analyst admitted that the firm's Electrification and Power units enjoy solid order momentum, but said persistent margin pressures and legacy contract drag in offshore wind remain operational headwinds.

All in all, the market is mispricing long-term profitability risks and overestimating how rapidly GE Vernova can expand its overall operating margins, he concluded.

Note that GEV currently pays a small dividend yield of 0.23% only.

On the plus side, other Wall Street firms do not agree with GLJ's bearish stance on GE Vernova at all.

According to Barchart, the consensus rating on GEV shares remains at "Strong Buy," with the mean price target of about $1,258 indicating potential upside of more than 40% from here.
