Gwyneth Paltrow revisited what it was like to be part of one of the most iconic couples of the ’90s. On Tuesday’s episode of the “Friends Keep Secrets” podcast, the Academy Award-winning actor said that she had her eye on Hollywood heartthrob Brad Pitt after first seeing him on the big screen years before they got together. “I remember seeing like ‘Thelma & Louise’ in the movie theater [and thinking] ‘that is the most handsome man,’” Paltrow said of the film that launched Pitt into global stardom. But when she and Pitt finally met, there was instant chemistry. “I [got] cast in the [1995] movie [“Seven”] with Brad, and I met him on set, and like, we had, like, kind of a love at first sight thing. It was pretty awesome. It was really fun,” Paltrow said. “He was so beautiful, and I think he was 31 and I was 22,” she added. Paltrow, who dated Pitt from 1994 to 1997, said that it was her first public relationship. “I had movies coming out, so I was sort of getting famous on my own – and I was famous as his girlfriend,” she said. Paltrow and Pitt got engaged in 1996, but the betrothal ended a few months later. “I was just young,” she said, before noting that things didn’t shake out for them because “we were working all over different parts of the world.” Paltrow also discussed how the publicity over their romance led to feelings of “shame” when the relationship didn’t last. “I think that the press aspect and all that makes it feel larger than life in a way,” she said. “You have to carry this faux cultural importance piece, and it’s like this extra burden and this extra almost shame that it didn’t work out, or whatever. It was hard.” Despite not making it to the altar, Paltrow said she still has a lot of love for Pitt. “I think there was an aspect of it that was very heady. I was very young, and he was this beautiful movie star. But he’s a great guy, and I love him to this day,” she said. “He’s a friend.” Paltrow tied the knot with Coldplay vocalist Chris Martin in 2003. The pair divorced in 2016, and she married writer/director Brad Falchuk in 2018. Pitt and “Friends” star Jennifer Aniston were married from 2000 to 2005. He was also married to Oscar-winning actor Angelina Jolie from 2014 to 2019. Watch Paltrow’s appearance on the “Friends Keep Secrets” podcast below.
